waiting for the subway at christie station, two guys around my age in unpreposessing "i'm a university student" clothes (that being straight jeans and uninspired, gap-style sweatshirts beneath tasteful duffle coats) were having a conversation. as i listened to them, i reluctantly came to the conclusion that although they were speaking in english, i had absolutely no way of understanding what the hell they were talking about. my best guess is that they were both going for their MBA at U of T (they got off at St. George).
now, i could understand the words they were saying, "CGA", "maximizing profit on returns", "sound investment planning" etc. but i had no idea how to relate any of the concepts to something material. they might as well have been speaking in code:
"apple above wallstreet brought of bristol."
"hah! negligent yellow future to a nine!"
[hearty laughter]
it was an interesting moment.
