Late like woah, and I'm so sorry for that-technically it was done in time for the 30th deadline, but it wasn't really, there were all sorts of problems with the end that were resolved when I wrote a half a page more during Chem. Hm. I should have known meeting one deadline was pushing it, meeting two just wasn't going to happen. Hope you all

In my first ficathon piece, I'd written the entire thing from either Maya or Gene's POV. Which was sort of necessary given the topic and my desire to be at least a little bit sneaky about Sam's "hobby," and also sort of fun, because the show was always from Sam's POV, but Gene and Maya are both fantastic characters and it was fun to explore their thoughts for that piece.
However, for this one I knew (once I'd commited myself to actually writing the Hardware store into it) that I couldn't just tackle this from Gene's POV, that most of the strange things this older, obsessive Gene would do around Sam would be lost in translation if left to Gene to tell the story, and that, mostly, if I was going to have an 18 year old Sam sleep with a 50-something Gene, I had to show the readers at least some of his reasons behind it.
I'm glad the characterizations are firm, because when I first wrote the ending to this, I didn't buy Sam at all. Originally, I didn't explore the fact that, really, he didn't want to even be involved with Gene, except for that tiny part of him that's desperately clingy, and he'd actually let Gene find out where he lived, which I realized, after reading it over in forensic psych class, was actually more stupid than counting the till in front of a customer. So obviously, some changes had to be made. For the better it seems.
Ray's words were some of the first things I wrote. Out of all the things Ray is, he's loyal above all else, and even if Sam will never be his favorite person, he'll defend Gene to the death, I think.
Glad you like it!
