I started my summer internship Tuesday, and I gotta say... it rocks. I'm working at the Crime Victim & Sexual Violence Center of Albany County, which covers the rape crisis services for the Albany area, and also provides victims of any type of violent crime with support (therapy, advocacy, etc.). It would be unpaid, except I applied for a Summer Service Associates grant through the Kirkland Project at school, and got it!! Basically, I have to work at least 30 hours a week for 10 weeks, and I essentially get paid $10 an hour. It truly could not have worked out any better for me: I'm spending the entire summer doing work that I'm passionate about, AND I'm getting paid for it!!!!
So, what exactly am I doing at CVSVC? It's gonna be pretty different, depending on the day. My activities will include random office work, answering phones, shadowing therapists doing consults at other agencies, working on my own projects (which are yet to be determined), possibly teaching a RAD (Rape Aggression Defense: Self-Defense for Women) course, and educational speaking egagements at schools, business, clubs, etc. I'm also currently going through the 35+ hour training to become a certified NY state Rape Crisis Counselor, so when I'm done with that at the end of June, I'll be working the hotline and covering the ER. Who knows what else will pop up, but for now, that's the plan.
On top of how perfectly this stuff fits into me and my interests, my office is the library, which has hundreds and hundreds of books, manuals, journals (including the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, which I have ILLed for articles more times than I'd ever want to count), newsletters and videos all about victims and perpetrators of crime. It's sick, but it's sort of like heaven to me. Also, everyone in the office is really, really nice and very welcoming.
That's basically all the news for now, except that I'm totally obsessed with Angels & Demons (the prequel to Da Vinci Code) and that Averi is going to be playing in Albany at the end of July!! YAY!
I better go get ready to head into the office and then to training... it's so sick that I'm actually excited about heading into the CVSVC for the day!! Yay, Summer '05!
Love,
Lindz

You're ready for greatness
Never more alive
And oh, dear
How they'll whisper your name
In time."
