Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
Seriously one of the biggest underground book followings of the decade. There are countless fans of this series out there, but you can't ever find them unless through a community or LJ search.
It's about a girl that moves to a small town in Washington, and discovers her most recent crush isn't what he seems - namely, a vampire.
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier.
One of the best fantasy books I've ever read.
Tamora Pierce, starting with Alanna: The First Adventure.
Great author. She's written around 30-40 books, and if she's still going after 20 some years, the publishers can't be wrong, can they?
Echoing both the Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey recommendations.
Also, for the older readers, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.
It's a big, big book. By the time I finished, I didn't remember half of the beginning of the story. But it's good, and well worth the read.
