Title: Sting Operation
Requested By: lt_horatiocaine
Prompt: Playful!Murphy
Rating: G
Author's Note: Well, this is pretty fluffy my friends. It's got banter, romantic cliches and petty theft. Playful!Murphy isn't a side of her personality I get to play with often and there are only a few situations it comes out in. It was a fun challenge to get away from the serious, often angsty Murphy. Fic requested from this meme. Still time to ask for something!

Murphy plucked Horatio’s sunglasses off the top of his head and leaned back against the dock railing behind her as she slid them on, “What do you think? Are they me?”

He chuckled slightly, “They look very nice on you.”

“So what have you got planned for me? A fishing trip?”

When Horatio had offered to show her Miami, she had expected a drive around the city in his Hummer and maybe they’d have dinner somewhere. Instead he’d asked her to meet him on a dock just short of the outskirts. It clearly wasn’t a tourist spot and all the boats looked to be privately owned. She didn’t have a clue what the head crime scene analyst was planning, but she was willing to find out.

“The best way to see Miami is from its beaches. This one starts a long string of them,” he glanced at her, then back out over the beaches, “If you don’t mind walking, that is.”

“A long stroll on the beach towards the end of the day? You’re courting me aren’t you?” She had already pushed off from the railing and was heading towards the stairs down to the beach. She knew he would follow.

“Courting’s rather old fashioned,” He said when he caught up to her again. “Romancing is term used for the modern woman.”

“Well, excuse me, you’re romancing me aren’t you?” She paused at the bottom step to take of her shoes. She hated walked on sand with shoes on. It was always better when she could wiggle her toes and sink her feet in.

“Here.” Horatio offered her a hand to help her balance and she took it. She was perfectly capable of balancing on her own but the sort of flirting thing they had going meant she was willing to take his gentlemanly gestures. And she liked it anyway. Her good mood let her be just a little more interested than normal. She just hoped she wasn’t reading the signs wrong.

“How are you adjusting to the city?” he asked when she was ready to set off again. She just smiled at the few extra seconds he held her hand before letting it go.

“It reminds me of Chicago in July, actually so the weather’s been easy. I still get turned around now and then, but I’m learning my way around.” She shrugged slightly, then glanced towards the buildings in the distance to their right. “I really can’t thank you enough for helping with the transfer.”

“You’re welcome,” his expression became serious. “How’s your dad doing?”

“The doctors aren’t sure if the stroke triggered his heart condition or if the stroke’s a result but they want to keep him in the hospital for a few months for rehab and then send him home with a nurse,” she sighed. “On the good days he can almost talk.”

Horatio’s hand reached out for hers again and for a brief moment she tangled their fingers together then let go. It was nice to know he cared, but she was still used to taking care of herself.

“But the guys in Homicide are done with the hazing rituals and I can stop opening my drawers to find big rubber snakes in them,” she said, trying to lighten the mood again. She really didn’t want to ruin a nice walk on the beach with him by thinking about her dad’s failing health.

“You could have brought in it, I would have dusted for prints so you could put it in the appropriate detective’s desk,” he said, going along with her not too subtle change of topic.

“You don’t think they know to glove up?”

“You’d be surprised what people forget when committing a crime. You didn’t wear gloves when you stole my sunglasses.”

“Stole them? I would never!” She put a hand to her chest, pretending to be aghast. “How could you accuse me of something like that?”

“It’s what the evidence leads me to believe,” he smiled now. It was one of his rare, real smiles. The ones that crinkled the corners of his eyes and made her smile back with the same genuine humor. “And I have a very reliable eye witness.”

“It’s a frame job, I tell you.” She turned to walk backwards so she could better see his face. “You’ll have to catch me first if you want to prove anything.”

“I always enjoy a good chase.”

She pushed his sunglasses up into her hair, the light was fading and it was easier to see him without them. “Because Horatio Caine always gets his man, right?”

“Yes, although,” he took her hand in his again, holding firm this time. “It’s easier when the criminal wants to get caught.”

“What can I say? I’m a sucker for a long walk on the beach.”
