The Big Show: Private Eyes

May 04, 2008 11:56

In 1998, Sony accidently sold 700,000 camcorders that had the technology to see through peoples clothes.

Murphy knew something was up when she walked into work and found most of the squad gathered around Kirmani’s desk. Most of them were grinning and chuckling about something. It was a good bet something was up. She had an eyebrow raised when she walked over and cleared her throat. “Don’t you all have work to do?” she asked, casting a look around the assembled group.

“We are working boss.” Kirmani said, smothering his grin.  “We’re looking over evidence from the Rodger’s Park homicide.” He held up the camcorder in his hands that had been found on the floor near the victim.

“All of you need to review this footage?” She kept the eyebrow raised. Her guess was it was another dirty home movie. While she liked the guys in her office like a second family, they were still guys and sometimes pigs. Over the years, she’d just leaned to accept it and move on. Lecturing them never worked any way.

“Well, you know, more eyes to spot things.” Kirmani was still grinning. Maybe it wasn’t amateur porn after all. Usually Kirmani got really embarrassed when it was porn. He should be stuttering and telling everyone to get to work by now. What else could keep a bunch of guys so interested though? Sports was the first thing that came to mind. Maybe the vic had recorded a Cubs game.

“All right, let me see that.” She held out a hand, no room for argument in her tone and Kirmani handed it over without question. Definitely not porn then. She pressed play and studied the little screen. She immediately regretted it. “Ah! What the hell is this, Kirmani?”

The group around Kirmani burst out laughing, Kirmani included. “No idea boss, but apparently the vic had a thing for the Golden Girls.”

“And this is what’s been keeping you all so fascinated?” Murphy closed the screen before the image of a bunch of senior citizens parading around without clothes on could burn itself farther into her brain.

“No.” Kirmani grabbed a report off his desk and offered it to her. She took it and gave him the camera back. “The AV guys say that the model of camera was recalled because it’s not supposed to have that feature.”

“Looking through people’s clothes is a feature?” Murphy muttered, reading over what the AV lab had found on the camera.

“It’s not supposed to be, but someone made a mistake. Only 700,000 of those hit the market and most of them were recalled before they could be sold. Out vic wasn’t one of the lucky people to buy one.”

She looked up at that and smiled, “So, our killer did.”

“Yup.” Kirmani handed over another report, “Only five people in the Chicagoland area were lucky enough to snag one and only one of those lives in Rodger’s Park now.”

Murphy had to hand it to him, Kirmani did good work. “Nice job.” She said, snapping the reports closed and handing them back to him. “But you’re all still perverts for standing around watching that stuff. And I better not hear from Marie that it went missing after the case was closed or else.”
