It was, Remus thinks later, once it is said and done with, not wholly unexpected. But, as is often the case, he'd had no clue at the time. No clue that just one word, one moment, one look, one breath could change his life forever.
"Moony," Sirius whispers across the dormitory room one night, so soft that Remus can barely hear it.
In the time between heartbeats, the endless space between seconds, Remus pauses, decides to stop feigning sleep, to raise his head.
Sirius' gaze is piercing. Remus feels it rather than sees it, feels the inexplicable something that comes from him.
And, with the hitch of Sirius' breath, Remus realises what he must've known all along but of which he had no clue.
Sirius was his.
