As a fair bit of warning I'm not completely awake nor emotionally sound at the moment so this may come off as a bit disjointed.
So I recently saw Nostalgia Chick’s TLC video and I have to say that seeing Lindsay talk openly about an artist she loves dying hit a chord with me. Left-Eyed died my senior year of high school… as did another artist that inspired me since I was a little girl, George Harrison. When Lindsay got serious in the video I was already fighting back tears because I could tell that she loved TLC with all sincerity. Music is one of those things that has always been there for me my entire life. All the musicians I love are like a part of my family, the biggest ones being the members of the Beatles.
It’s when she said my inner 9-year-old that put me over the edge. When I was 9 I was seeing Paul McCartney for the first time, the man who I’d had this disturbing crush on since I was 3 (and still have >_>). I remember when George Harrison died, I couldn’t forget no matter how much I wanted to. I mourned him for days because it was like having that uncle that you didn’t see a lot but you still loved him just as much die. And also, Layne Stayley the lead singer of Alice in Chains, the only band out of the 90’s “grunge” era that I liked died of a drug overdose after years of being in and out of rehab.
Now after having a moment where I identified with Lindsay on the video, one thing did REALLY piss me off.
Comparing Amy Winehouse to Left Eye.
No. Just. No.
She said so in her video that Left Eye battled with her addictions and actually tried to get better. Amy Winehouse didn’t. Sure they both had the same disease but one wanted to get better and the other one didn’t. It’s not a struggle if they don’t try and fight it in the first place. Amy Winehouse was PROUD of her disease, she didn’t want to change. Yes, she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder but did she attempt to get help even after she made herself all that money? No. She continued her self destructive behavior up until the day of her death.
You know who would’ve been truly tragic to see die of overdose? Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy has tried his damndest to get better so many times and he finally got clean. In fact even on his reality show he managed to slip back in to drink… because his wife was diagnosed with cancer. And what did he say on the show when this happened? He said he was fucking ashamed of himself and if memory serves me right spent the next couple of minutes talking about what a piece of shit he was.
Did Amy Winehouse do this when she got caught smoking crack on camera? No.
And I’ve heard people use the arguments with rock stars of the 60’s/70’s most notable the famous members of the 27 Club. This was before drug use and alcoholism were treated as something serious, this was back in the day where promoters would give artists complimentary drugs and alcohol in their dressing room to ensure they’d be happy enough to go on stage. The world is different now, we approach things like drug addiction as a problem now. There are programs and rehab centers now. The difference between Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse is that Winehouse had the ability to get help. SHE. DIDN’T. WANT. IT.
