So, my aunt Bebe has a friend named Arlene Pace, who used to be Bebe's senior nurse when Bebe worked in a hospital in the 60s and 70s. Pace is now quite advanced in age, and I spend a lot of time with her when I go home, because I miss my own grandmothers and because her own children and grandchildren visit infrequently. Apparently, the last time her granddaughter (who I by sheer coincidence know from high school) saw her, she told Pace that there was no God...which you usually wouldn't say to an 85+ woman. At any rate, Pace sent me a card in the mail the other day, and she wrote the sweetest little passage in it:
"For my special friend, with all my love- because I want to tell you just how dear you are to me, because my every thought of you is as loving as can be, because my heart is filled with things that words alone can't say--have a wonderful birthday."
She enclosed 10 dollars to buy a few pints of ice cream, since we both love ice cream. In fact her daily diet is:
*Breakfast: half piece of dry toast
*Lunch: Small amount of ice cream
*Dinner: Small amount of ice cream
(really, every day that's her routine)
