Stories were told of her. Songs sung of her beauty. A legend, a prophecy had spoken of her long before she had ever arrived. A thousand years after they had left the first time, people still poke of her, still told the stories. Still sang. She imagined they would continue to do so, forever and ever.

And here, in the cold, real world of school such thoughts were an equally cold comfort for her. She could remember respect, reverence, awe, even sometimes. But love? She did not fool herself with thinking any of them had loved her. Loved Lucy, perhaps. Her younger sister had always been the favorite, after all. Of everyone. Of Susan, herself.

but that, neither, was truly comforting when she sat here in class and the girls around her giggled and whispered behind their hands about silly Susan with her head stuck in the clouds. Here where she had no friends, no subjects. No one but herself.

She found herself watching two fo the girls talking together, not about her but about lipstick and the best places to get it and how to hide it so you could put it on after you got to school so your parents wouldn't know. They seemed happy as they smiled and talked and traded secrets.

Perhaps though Susan that is the key...
