I read Kira Kira by this same author and it was wonderful. So when I saw this book for sale at the LA Times Festival of Books, I thought I'd buy it.

I am not sorry I did!

Sumiko is 12 when Pearl Harbor is bombed. Her family is split and moved to 2 different internment camps. Life is hard is Poston AZ for Sumiko at first. It's a hot hot desert with not a lot to do.

Soon she develops friendships. There's also an Mohave reservation nearby. When outside the camp, she meets and slowly makes friends with a Native American boy.

This was a great book. It lived up to all my expectations. I can't do it justice here, which makes me sad. If you live near me and would like to borrow my copy, just let me know.
