Mibs (short for Mississippi) is about to turn 13. When kids in her family have their 13th birthday, they get their savvy. This is a talent of some sort. One of her brothers makes storms, the other influences electricity. One of the issues is that they need time to learn how to control their savvies.
Mibs' birthday goes quite awry. Her father was in an accident and is in the hospital so mom and dad can't be there. The local minister's wife has insisted on giving her a birthday party. No one can know about the savvies and so this birthday party is very stressful. No one knows what'll happen or when Mibs' savvy will manifest itself.
Also Mibs is anxious to see her father.
