I spake too soon.

Turns out, they're not doing such a good job with containing the bird flu outbreak at an English farm - it's now linked to the adjacent processing plant, and more turkeys have fallen sick at other sheds. My question is: other sheds? You mean they weren't even culling all the poultry on the same farm? Oy.

And now comes news infected meat may have entered the food supply.

The Food Standards Agency confirmed today that it was investigating the possibility that turkey meat contaminated by bird flu at a Bernard Matthews poultry farm has entered the human food chain. ...

The environment minister Ben Bradshaw warned that legal action could be launched following the latest developments and possible breaches in bio-security at the plant.

Yeah, they're peeved. The company had them parroting their spin, and the government ended up looking like gormless twits.

"Our advice that avian flu does not pose a food safety risk remains unchanged. However, it is illegal for infected meat to be in our food and so the agency would take any appropriate action if it were found to be there.

Uh-huh.

I still maintain the greater risk to all of us lies in Indonesia, not Suffolk. That doesn't mean I'd be eating any Bernard Matthews products any time soon. (ETA: for anybody in the U.K., Bernard Matthews also provides store brand turkey to Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury.)

Meanwhile, Bernard Matthews himself has postponed the collection of an honour from the Queen. He had been due to pick up a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) award for services to charity today from Buckingham Palace at an investiture.

*motherfucking headdesk* Well, at least he's not without all shame. If this were happening in the U.S. under Bush, he'd be picking up his Medal of Freedom on Tuesday.
