ALSO, TO PEOPLE READING THIS APP: I ask that you please be aware that the general gist of his back story is unknown; only certain bits are given, so even the wiki is just extensive guesswork. So... some of this is speculation, on my part, regarding his past/his ( Read more... )

BACKSTORY/CANON HISTORY EXPLANATION {extra} derpchan June 1 2010, 07:58:48 UTC
AD 2099
History before now can, of course, be assumed in the world of BlazBlue to be entirely the same down to the wars, who is dead and who lived, here. However, the difference being that this universe is set far into the future. Before the beginning of the plot of the game, while humanity was possibly considered at its 'peak,' a terrible, unimaginable disaster would strike the face of the planet. Something so terrifying that, to this day in the world of BlazBlue, people still speak of it in fear. ... Many would die in the terror that would follow, later to be known as the Dark War, the First War of Magic, and many other names. What was it, you ask? Well, one day, out of the blue, seemingly, a large, unstoppable monster known only as "the Black Beast" emerged, covering the entire planet in a mysterious, venomous mist. In time, the mist would come to be known as seithr, and it was what allowed the Black Beast to function on the planet. Faced with this threat, humanity worked together, and turned to the technology at hand: nuclear ( ... )

BACKSTORY/CANON HISTORY EXPLANATION {extra} derpchan June 1 2010, 08:01:22 UTC
AD 2110
By this time, the Six Heroes have defeated the monster, finally, and humanity had a 'new' golden age ahead of it in which to rebuild.

Over half the human population had been sacrificed or slaughtered. But to them, it was little price to pay for stopping the beast. However they stopped it is never truly said (although it is implied it was sealed or destroyed), but it is stopped nonetheless. The six heroes, however, for whatever reasons, would vanish after their final curtain call. Only their legacy would remain.

There would still be more to come, however, even without them. In order to maintain and regulate the use of Armagus (Ars Magus by the way is magic, and an Ars is a spell), the Novus Orbis Librarium Armagus (known as the NOL for short, or simply the Librarium) was created. At first, all was well--the weapons created during the Dark War were dangerous, magical artifacts, however, and the NOL's original reason for existing was to keep the peace on the planet and help those in need. To clean up after the war ( ... )

AD 21XX
It wouldn't last, however, as humankind cannot resolve their differences of opinion, and absolute power can corrupt absolutely. This is what happened to the Librarium. While humanity was rebuilding, picking up it's pieces, they seized absolute control. Paranoid and looking to become an empire over everything, those in charge of the Novus Orbis Librarium began imposing harsher rules and strictly limiting the use of Armagus to only those who they deemed 'legally' acceptable. Eventually, a death penalty would become the law for those people who would 'illegally' use Armagus, and the NOL became the de facto dictator of almost the entire population left on the planet and in their cities. With a military branch (including everything from an Intelligence Department to a special guard) and Armagus might to back it up as well, the NOL would be feared by many, and many would avoid them. It was follow the rules, or be imprisoned. ... Or worse ( ... )

CARL'S HISTORY {EXTRA; EXTENSIVE OVERVIEW} derpchan June 1 2010, 08:36:41 UTC
Part One
Carl Clover was born sometime before the Ikaruga Civil War broke out (more about that later) in Austria, with 2189 AD being the earliest possible date (going with the assumption he is ten years of age, of course). His sister, Ada Clover, while not given a canonical age in the game, was most likely born long before that. Therefore, one can assume Carl was likely a 'late' child, as Ada was in her teens by the time he was in his early years (that is, around five or six). He lived a fairly normal life, being babied by his big sister, and watching his dad, Relius, who apparently worked for a mysterious company by the name of Sector Seven, invent and otherwise tinker with things most men would not even be able to remotely fathom. Relius was an alchemic scientist, and his experiments in cloning were, unfortunately, likely hidden from Carl and Ada; it would only later become relevant to the rest of the cast that Carl's father is the cause (more or less) of the story's entire time loop. ... But that isn't about this. This is about ( ... )

Part Two
The Military Academy was, coincidentally, sponsored by the Novus Orbis Librarium Armagus, otherwise generally known as the NOL for short. Of course, being an intelligent young boy, he was rather quick to rise to the top of his class. He enjoyed reading and learning as much as he did mechanical things, sweets (especially cookies! Even better if they were baked by Ada), and his other various hobbies involving tinkering and mechanics. Of course, he was by no means a physical fighter or fit for being a soldier such as Jin Kisaragi, so perhaps his goals were more educational, or simply looking for a political position. Whatever it was he wanted to be, he enjoyed his time in the Academy very much. Aside from reading, Carl very much enjoyed learning the violin, as previously mentioned, and it is more than likely that it was not forced upon him and that he did, in fact, choose to learn it himself; such an instrument that would be difficult for others came quite easily to a gifted young mind such as himself. He, like many Austrians, ( ... )

...But days that good, for anyone, as Noel notes in her storyline, would never last.

... Could never last.

Now, while he learned he COULD live by 'himself,' or without his big sister, he still missed her. Eventually, it only served to make him wish to be near his sister more often... and what was to come would completely cement his fear of losing Ada, and make him a complete co-dependent on her.

Not long before Carl had gotten used to Academy life, the Ikarugan Civil war broke out. At the time, he was studying to likely become an officer himself (or perhaps part of the NOL's Information depart, which consists of covert spy operations), and by the time Noel Vermillion was ready to graduate several years later (albeit six months early), Carl had dropped out, despite his top-class grades, genius mind, and ability to analyze things from a perspective that any Military organization would find useful. Why? ... Well, in order to make this make sense, one must first understand the back story behind it, after all.(Now, while I'm ( ... )

Part Four
Relius Clover, for reasons unknown, took his own daughter, killed her (presumably), and used her soul (or perhaps body, as well) to create the Armagus weapon know as Deus Ex Machina Nox Nyctores: Nirvana. Or recreate, as it is hinted at perhaps more than one of this particular Nox has existed (or exists) before. Whatever or whomever it was created for, the only thing that is truly known is that because of this is highly likely the reason Carl dropped out of the Academy, and completely lost his marbles. Official art shows his sister, Ada Clover, being half-mechanical and half human still; it's extremely likely that Relius, as a scientist and alchemist, used her body and soul to create Nirvana. Carl himself in-game hints that "father turned you [Ada] into this," in fact, and the crack on the puppet's face is only further proof of it, as is the fact it sacrifices itself for Carl in one of his story mode endings. Regardless of whether or not this is really true, Carl believes it to be with his entire being, suggesting he may ( ... )

As I've stated previously in his history section (should you care to peruse it), Carl was once a very sheltered, well-off Austrian boy, who was more than just slightly clingy to his sister, Ada Clover, as they had no mother and she seems to have took care of Carl, cooked for him, and all of that. He was more likely than not raised around a plethora of knowledge in the books he would so grow to love, and would learn a refined sense of pleasure from the finer end of things in life, as most single sons from well-off families like his own would ( ... )

Part two

In fact, one could say the very automatons or puppets he has created using his inherited genius for alchemical and Armagus construction are very much based on the types of pieces you find whilst playing chess. He has knights, pawns, all sorts of puppets to help him out; most of them are based on the knight or castle-type theme, or based on chess pieces. He's skilled enough in his use of manipulating and controlling seithr (and mature enough) to know when not to overdo it as well, which says quite a bit about his advanced, enlightened mind.

However, after his father did something to turn his sister into Nirvana (likely right in front of him; it is assumed to have been a work of alchemy and something else using the girl's body and/or soul), then subsequently disappeared without a word, it broke the boy's sanity and fragile, young mind into so many fine pieces... not rather unlike his favorite chess set, to be honest. Carl is now a child who could have once been a very bright star with a shining career who could have helped ( ... )

Part three

... While, at first, this may seem like a very sweet thing, there is STILL more to Carl Clover. His is a very complex, if not multi-layered personality, and breaking past and peeling each layer away takes quite a bit of analysis, and not just an initial glance; to see every dimension to the boy is going to take quite a bit, for any person.

As I've said previously, he projects the air of a 'young master' archetype in that he bows to women, is considerate of others, and has all the markings and fine mannerisms that one would expect from one raised properly in a wealthy family. However, most of this, while once true, is more or less just an outer façade by the child, although it is ingrained in part of him. In truth?

... Carl despises adults and liars most of all (often the two end up mixing in his presence, unfortunately, or are mistaken to be lying, as they do not know the whole truth). More than anything, honestly. He is suspicious of even the smallest of kindly gestures by almost anyone, even if he doesn't say a thing ( ... )

OFFICIAL MOVESET (CALAMITY TRIGGER) laetatiocaedes June 7 2010, 08:26:23 UTC
Carl's moves
• Vivace: A quick dash. Not actually an attack, but he can quickly, as if using the wind or an automaton to propel himself, dash to the other side of his opponent.
• Cantabile: An automaton shoots out from Carl's cape at lightning speed and grabs the opponents feet, flinging them skyward. He refers to this as "their playtime," as well.
• Allegretto: Several sharp lances from the horseback automatons he keeps folded behind his cape attack from behind said cape in tangent from his side using their flagpoles/spears; applicable usually only while in the air. It's very, VERY quick. You'd have to be some master Ninja to avoid this, seriously. It's FAST. And probably painful, if it hits the right spot, realistically...
• La Campanella: He calls Ada to him and is able to use his mastery over magic to, yes, TELEPORT HER directly behind him. But only behind him. This is very important. He also is open during this; but it's quite quick ( ... )

Battle Information

Carl isn't, obviously, seeing his size, the BEST fighter in the world. Being a child of just TEN, and seeing as Nirvana is generally limp when he IS attacking--it scarcely can move on its own--Carl relies on the help of his Armagus (short for Ars Magus; an Ars is a spell) puppets and machines to extend his (short) reach and give his hits more impact. Cute though they may be, those little chess-piece looking gold automatons are NO laughing matter when they attack you: they're not easy to break, they run on MAGIC power, and they are, in fact, quite capable of killing and sharp ( ... )
