BACKSTORY/CANON HISTORY EXPLANATION {extra} derpchan June 1 2010, 07:58:48 UTC

History before now can, of course, be assumed in the world of BlazBlue to be entirely the same down to the wars, who is dead and who lived, here. However, the difference being that this universe is set far into the future. Before the beginning of the plot of the game, while humanity was possibly considered at its 'peak,' a terrible, unimaginable disaster would strike the face of the planet. Something so terrifying that, to this day in the world of BlazBlue, people still speak of it in fear. ... Many would die in the terror that would follow, later to be known as the Dark War, the First War of Magic, and many other names. What was it, you ask? Well, one day, out of the blue, seemingly, a large, unstoppable monster known only as "the Black Beast" emerged, covering the entire planet in a mysterious, venomous mist. In time, the mist would come to be known as seithr, and it was what allowed the Black Beast to function on the planet. Faced with this threat, humanity worked together, and turned to the technology at hand: nuclear weaponry, and advance computers. However, no matter how many countries went into the battle... no matter how many countless atomic bombs, missiles, and warheads were dropped, no matter how many people died trying to stop it; armies, civilians, innocents, nothing could even remotely injure the monster, and it's fury knew no bounds.

This was when the Six Heroes (of which only several are known), led by a man named Hakumen, banded together during humanity's darkest hour, when all seemed lost. Nine, one of the six heroes and humanity's first true sorceress, or witch, was an alchemist who first foresaw that the technology at hand, and the Black Beast's 'remains,' or seithr, could be combined and used against it. The only way to fight it would be with something of its own caliber, after all. Though many perished due to the beast's attacks, many more would need to be sacrificed to stop it. Later, it would be said that Nine merely "taught humanity how to use both magic and technology," known as Armagus, but this is not all she did. Nine created weapons that ran on the beast's seithr, giving them a life of their own and an otherworldly power, while teaching armies and others her techniques in alchemy, science, and the arts of witchcraft. From thousands of human souls, and through the magic--but poisonous--mist the beast had drenched the land in, the Nox Nyctores class of Armagus weapons were born.

The war, however, would wage on for many, many years before the heroes would appear, and possibly longer afterwards...

By this time, the Six Heroes have defeated the monster, finally, and humanity had a 'new' golden age ahead of it in which to rebuild.

Over half the human population had been sacrificed or slaughtered. But to them, it was little price to pay for stopping the beast. However they stopped it is never truly said (although it is implied it was sealed or destroyed), but it is stopped nonetheless. The six heroes, however, for whatever reasons, would vanish after their final curtain call. Only their legacy would remain.

There would still be more to come, however, even without them. In order to maintain and regulate the use of Armagus (Ars Magus by the way is magic, and an Ars is a spell), the Novus Orbis Librarium Armagus (known as the NOL for short, or simply the Librarium) was created. At first, all was well--the weapons created during the Dark War were dangerous, magical artifacts, however, and the NOL's original reason for existing was to keep the peace on the planet and help those in need. To clean up after the war.

The Librarium was in charge where the new cities of earth would be built, and governing the use of Armagus. Though originally it had started with noble intentions, the Librarium would eventually become quite corrupt. The cities it would build, make rules for, and regulate, would become known as the Hierarchical cities. Numbering in the numerous, from one to thirteen--possibly even more--they would face the sky, vertically built so as to protect humankind from the seithr that now polluted the planet. As it is poisonous to humans and denser in atmosphere towards the actual earth itself, it was important that the remaining population live higher in altitude so as to avoid over-exposure in denser regions where seithr was common. No matter how one tries, the seithr in an area will, eventually, regenerate. This was the Black Beast's final mark on the land and humanity, and that is why it is called "The Beast's Remains".

But, within time, humanity would learn small amounts of seithr, which vary depending upon the person, could be used in an Ars, and in the use of Armagus, without too much harm. For some time, things were fairly peaceful with the NOL...

It wouldn't last, however, as humankind cannot resolve their differences of opinion, and absolute power can corrupt absolutely. This is what happened to the Librarium. While humanity was rebuilding, picking up it's pieces, they seized absolute control. Paranoid and looking to become an empire over everything, those in charge of the Novus Orbis Librarium began imposing harsher rules and strictly limiting the use of Armagus to only those who they deemed 'legally' acceptable. Eventually, a death penalty would become the law for those people who would 'illegally' use Armagus, and the NOL became the de facto dictator of almost the entire population left on the planet and in their cities. With a military branch (including everything from an Intelligence Department to a special guard) and Armagus might to back it up as well, the NOL would be feared by many, and many would avoid them. It was follow the rules, or be imprisoned. ... Or worse.

For those who did not, bounties would be placed on their heads. Vigilantes would be born from this, declared such for their ruthless turning in of 'wanted' criminals or outlaws to the NOL. The general public would come to see vigilantes more as bounty hunters who worked completely for the Librarium. Although not entirely legal, the Librarium and their 'guns' for hire would share information, though this is a one-way street. Vigilantes are at the mercy of the Librarium, and when the NOL says jump, a vigilante asks, "How high?", so to speak. Still, they are not directly in control of the rogue group or groups of vigilantes (it is highly unusual to find more than one at a time, as they tend not to work with another, however), and leave the third party to go about the task of collecting those on their "Wanted" list however they see fit. Usually, it doesn't matter if the bounty is brought in alive... or dead. If pleased, the NOL will be generous and forthcoming to a vigilante (such as Carl), and count on them in the future.

Eventually, one of the cities, Ikaruga, broke into civil war, fighting against the Librarium for freedom from it's harshly imposed rules. It was during this conflict, perhaps slightly before it, that Carl was in the Military Academy funded by the NOL, as I have previously mentioned. Sometime during the conflict, Carl would drop out to pursue a path toward becoming (and successfully achieving) the unofficial title of vigilante. The NOL however would, in the end, win the war, and one of his upperclassmen, Jin Kisaragi, leading a unit to stop the conflict, would become known as "The Hero of Ikaruga", ironically enough.

... Eventually, from Ikaruga's remains, Kagutsuchi, the 13th Hierachical city, would be built. Many of the leftover civillians and fighters from the Ikaruga Civil War still reside in Kagutsuchi, trying to rebuild.
