Pepa was sleeping peacefully until she started to hear noises around her, people talking and moving around. She slowly opened her eyes and was blinded by the sunlight coming through the bus’ window. She put her forearm in front of her eyes and looked around, immediately recognizing Sevilla’s bus station. She had finally arrived.
After letting everyone else leave the bus, she stood up from her seat and stretched… these seats were definitely not made for her, good thing she could sleep practically anywhere. At least having to leave her parent’s house at 18 without any place where to go had helped her at something. She took her bag and descended, receiving a warm smile from the bus driver on the way down… maybe too warm, but that was something Pepa was used to already.
Once she stepped on firm land, she looked around and immediately saw a short brunette waving at her. Amanda. Pepa started walking in her direction and before she knew it she was greeted with a big kiss on the lips.
“Pepa! I’m so glad you are finally here!”
Pepa smiled, “I’m glad to be here too, honey.”
“I missed you, you know… I don’t think I’m too happy with you being in Madrid during the week…”
Pepa sighed, “I know, I’m not too happy about it either, but you know I have to…”
“Yeah, I know, but I still don’t get why they had to call you back.”
Pepa wrapped her arm around her companion’s shoulder and started walking towards the car. “Probably because I already participated in this case before, darlin’… remember that’s what got me there in the first place?”
“Yes, yes…”
“Well, but let’s not worry about that, I’m here for the weekend, and I’m all yours,” Pepa said as she got into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
“That’s the part I love the most,” Amanda replied.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Twenty minutes later they arrived at the apartment. It was a small one-bedroom apartment which wasn’t as big as Pepa would like but served its purpose. Her girlfriend offered to prepare something to eat while Pepa showered and changed clothes.
While in the shower, Pepa sighed and closed her eyes. This wasn’t the life she wanted to live. Working in Madrid was tiring enough, but having to come back on the weekends to return the next day was already wearing her out. Sadly, for the moment there was nothing she could do. She couldn’t just leave and not see Amanda in she didn’t know how many weeks… not after everything she had done for her during the last few months.
Don Lorenzo had called her about two weeks ago, telling her he needed her back in Madrid to finish the case she had began working on when she first got there and she immediately declined the offer. It wasn’t too long before Paco called her, asking her the same thing… but this time it was her brother asking for help, and after all they had been through she couldn’t turn her back on him, so she ended up agreeing, but with one condition: to be able to have every weekend off so she could return to Sevilla to spend some time with her girlfriend… of course that small part of information was left behind and Don Lorenzo didn’t wait too long to agree.
The most difficult part of this whole deal was having to see Silvia everyday and work with her. As much anger Pepa had worked up, she couldn’t help but miss her company, but out of respect to herself and her girlfriend she couldn’t change how things were…
Girlfriend… darn, how had she gotten into such a mess? Pepa was not the type of person to have girlfriends… the only person she would have considered being serious with was Silvia and everyone knows how that went. But this current situation… it had all been part of the consequences of everything that had happened since the day Silvia didn’t show up at their ‘date’.
A few months back, on the way to Sevilla, Pepa realized she had nowhere to go and absolutely nothing to do. Of course, being called from her old job was a lie and only an excuse to avoid Lola and Paco from asking more questions about her leaving, so the only thing that occurred to her was calling her ex-girlfriend, the one she had broken up with and had made her go to Madrid in the first place.
As expected, Amanda immediately received Pepa in her place, got her her old job back at the Sevilla’s police station and helped her with everything she needed. One night, Amanda leaned in and kissed her. Pepa, out of gratitude or whatever it was, kissed her back and since then there was no turn back. Although she wasn’t too happy about it, she forced herself to continue with it… she was so patient with someone who didn’t even correspond her feelings, she wasn’t willing to believe she couldn’t be with someone who had done everything she could to help her.
After getting dressed, Pepa went to the dining room and sat down in front of Amanda.
“So, how is everything in Madrid?” Amanda asked.
“Same old,” replied Pepa as she started eating. She was really hungry.
“And… how’s Silvia?” she asked, a tint of jealousy in her voice.
Pepa looked at her and shook her head. “Not again, Amanda… please?”
“What? I’m just asking,” she replied innocently.
“There’s nothing to ask… I barely speak with her-“
“Oh, but you do?” Amanda interrupted her.
“Well, of course I do,” Pepa replied, frustrated, “we work together, like it or not, I have to talk to her.” This was one of the reasons why they had broken up in the first place… Amanda was way too jealous, and even though this time she had good reasons to feel that way, it always ended badly.
“I’m sorry, I-“
“I know,” Pepa said, and took her hand from across the table, “but you have to trust me when I tell you there’s absolutely nothing going on between us, believe me.”
Amanda smiled, relieved. Pepa had told her what had happened between them during the first days of her arrival, and Amanda could tell Silvia was different to Pepa than any other woman she had been with, but if Pepa told her there was nothing to worry about, then she believed her.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
The weekend passed by rather quickly and before she knew it Pepa was back in Madrid, watching TV in her brother’s living room. As she watched the weekend’s soccer matches results she heard a knock on the door. She stood up and opened it, surprised to find Silvia on the other side.
“Hey…” Silvia said, softly.
“Hello Silvia,” Pepa replied, God, she gets prettier everyday, “Lola’s not home yet, maybe she’s still at the tavern, you should check there,” she said quickly and started closing the door.
“I’m not here to talk to Lola, Pepa,” she said as she pushed the door open again, surprising Pepa.
“Paco’s not here ei-“
“Pepa, shush, I’m here to talk to you.”
“Me? I’m sorry Silvia, I believe there’s nothing we need to talk about…” Pepa said, and stared at Silvia as she walked right past her, ignoring her last words, and sitting down on the couch.
“Sit,” Silvia said, patting the seat next to her.
“I’m alright here, thanks,” Pepa replied as she closed the door and crossed her arms, staring at Silvia, “I don’t have much time, so…”
“God Pepa, stop it!” Silvia said, pissed, “This has nothing to do with us, okay? So drop that attitude,” she said, causing Pepa to relax her shoulders and narrow her eyebrows. “Tomorrow is Lola and Paco’s anniversary, and I was thinking they deserve a celebration, so I was planning on doing something at my place, and since you are Paco’s sister I thought you would like to participate as well,” Silvia said, standing up. “If you want to help, be there by 5pm.” Then she walked to the door, opened it and stepped out, turning back one more time. “And in case it wasn’t clear, it’s a surprise so don’t say anything to them.” And she left, without looking back.
Pepa stood there, staring at the now empty hallway. She thought Silvia was here to try and make amends one more time, but apparently it wasn’t the case.
She sat down again on the couch after closing the door, looking blankly ahead. Well, better this way, right?
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
The next day, Silvia was in her apartment putting away everything she had bought at the supermarket for Paco and Lola’s anniversary dinner. As she started folding the empty bags to put them away she heard the doorbell ring.
She left the kitchen and headed towards the door. She looked through the peephole and saw Pepa standing on the other side, looking impatient. Silvia looked at her watch: 4:59pm… punctual as always, that was one thing she loved about her. She finally opened the door and let Pepa in.
“Hey…” she said.
“Hello,” Pepa replied, as she entered and looked around, seeing no sings of a party whatsoever. “Nobody here yet?”
“Hm, nope,” replied Silvia, “only you and me… you think you’ll be able to handle it?” she replied teasingly.
“I can handle everything and anything,” Pepa replied, clearly not in the same joking tone.
“Oh, come on, Pepa…”
“Silvia,” she interrupted her, “I’m here strictly for my brother and Lola, ok? So let’s get into business.”
“Fine, let’s head to the kitchen then.”
Pepa quickly entered the kitchen and looked around… no signs of food either. She looked at the clock that was hanging in the kitchen, ten minutes had passed and no one had arrived yet. She turned around and faced Silvia, who almost walked into her and frowned when she saw the look on Pepa’s face.
“Did you set me up?” Pepa asked.
“What?” Silvia replied, surprised and taken aback by the question.
“Did-you-set-me-up?” Pepa asked again, looking angry.
Silvia laughed, “C’mon, don’t be so self-centered, I don’t have time to plan how to set you up,” she said, still laughing.
“I don’t get what’s so funny,” Pepa said, crossing her arms in front of her.
“Why would I even try to set you up, Pepa?” Silvia asked, getting serious now.
“I don’t know, maybe because all you’ve tried to do since I came back is be with me, talk to me.”
“Oh, that… yeah, well, maybe it’s because before you left that’s what we used to do, you know, talk, hang out…” Silvia said sarcastically, remarking how it had been Pepa who had left and broken all connections, not her.
“Then where is everyone? And everything?” Pepa asked, pointing around. Silvia laughed again. “What’s so funny?”
“Let me remind you we are two different people.”
“I haven’t forgotten, Silvia.”
“So different that I put everything away even when I’m going to use it, so if you open that cabinet,” she said, pointing at one on the right side of Pepa, “you’ll see some chips and if you open that one,” she said pointing at the one on the other side, “you’ll find more…”
“Alright, alright, I get it,” Pepa said, looking away.
“And about the guests, I believe I told you to come if you wanted to help which means everyone will be here once everything is ready,” Silvia said, angry. She couldn’t believe how Pepa was acting. If this was going to be the person she was going to have to see everyday, she wasn’t too eager about it.
“Look, Silvia…” Pepa said, feeling completely foolish and knowing when to retreat, “I’m so-“
“You know what, Pepa? Save it, really. Next time, think things through, ok? I know what I did was bad and I should’ve called, but that doesn’t mean you have to be such a bitch,” she said and walked away from the kitchen. Maybe it was better if they stayed on separate rooms for the night.
Pepa watched Silvia walk right past her and sighed, leaning on the counter. Maybe she had taken things too far. After all, it had been her mistake to try and date Silvia. She knew she was straight and she knew she shouldn’t have messed with her.
Pepa looked over her shoulder and observed Silvia. She had started decorating the living room, not looking in her direction at all. Pepa decided it was better to start working before everyone else arrived, so she turned around and began to prepare the food.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Many hours later and few -closer to none- words spoken between them, the surprise party had been a success and everyone was really happy, especially Lola and Paco.
“We want to thank you so much,” Lola said, hugging Paco and giving him a quick peck, “it was really a great surprise, we had no idea,” she said, smiling at her sister. She knew it had been her idea.
“Yes, thanks guys,” Paco said, in his particular expressive way.
“It took me so long to convince them to come with me!” Sara said, making everyone laugh. Pepa looked at Silvia, who was smiling as she watched her sister and brother in law. She missed making her smile.
“Well, we didn’t know why we had to come… she wants to be so independent now, never wants us to go with her, and all of the sudden she wanted us to come to visit Silvia… it didn’t make any sense!” Lola said.
“Well, I’m glad it surprised you guys, really. You deserve it,” Silvia said, and smiled at her sister. “Cheers to you guys, and to many, many more years of happy marriage,” she said, raising her glass of wine.
After a few minutes, everyone started saying their goodbyes and left, forced by Lola to leave Pepa behind while she was in the bathroom.
A moment later Pepa came out of the bathroom and looked around. “Where is everyone?” she asked, surprised.
Silvia raised her hands, “Don’t look at me, I swear I didn’t set you up,” she said ironically. Pepa sighed. “Leave now, please, before you think I locked you in or something.”
“Silvia…” Pepa said.
“Don’t, really. I’m not in the mood, because I know for sure anything you say right now will be another reason to fight, so please, just go,” Silvia replied, as she started gathering everything to take to the kitchen.
“Do you want me to stay and help?” Pepa asked, picking up a few dishes.
“Really?” Silvia asked.
“Really,” Pepa answered, and smiled at her for the first time in a long time.
“I don’t want to, thanks,” Silvia replied, immediately erasing Pepa’s smile from her face. “You can go now.”
Pepa stared at her, and opened her mouth to argue, but was cut off by Silvia. “Really Pepa… I think we’ve given each other enough bad moments, just go, ok?” it hurt her really bad to have to ask Pepa to leave, but it was better this way. She didn’t have th energy to get into another fight.
“Alright,” Pepa said as she grabbed her jacket and left, her tail between her legs… maybe she had taken things too far this time around.
Silvia cleaned everything and went to bed, a wear feeling at the pit of her stomach… nothing she wasn’t used to by now.
