Three Months Later

Silvia grabbed the paper work from her desk and headed towards Don Lorenzo’s office. She knocked the door and opened it.

“Hola papá,” she said, looking at the files she had in her hands, “here I have the information you asked me for,” she looked up and handed them to him, realizing he was not alone. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were…” as she looked at her dad’s companion, she realized she knew that back and that hair, “…Pepa?” she asked, not believing her eyes and her stomach immediately crunching.

Pepa turned around, quickly meeting her eyes to then turn them towards the paper work Silvia was still holding. “Hello, Silvia,” she said seriously, while taking the files out of her hands and turning towards Don Lorenzo. “Do you want me to start with this?” she asked him.

“Yes, and if you find anything strange, let me know.”

Silvia stood there, looking at Pepa as she talked to her dad, completely ignoring her presence.

Don Lorenzo looked at Silvia. “Can I do anything else for you, honey?”

Silvia shook her head, looking at him. “N-no, that was it…” she said, turning around and leaving his office, closing the door behind her as she stood right outside.

Pepa was back… and she had completely ignored her… but God, the effects she had on her were still the same. She sat down on her desk, facing her dad’s door, waiting for Pepa to come out… she wanted to talk to her, find out why she had left, what was new… and to feel her close again, to have her look at her as if she were the only person in the whole world.

Silvia took a few steps and sat down on the first chair she found, looking around impatiently. Five minutes later Don Lorenzo’s door opened and Pepa came out, bringing the files with her. Silvia took a deep breath and stood up, quickly heading towards Pepa.

“Pepa! Hi!”

“Hello… again,” Pepa said, not looking at her and without stopping.

“How have you been?” Silvia asked excitedly, trying to keep up with her, walking fast.

“I’m good, thanks,” she replied shortly.

“It’s been a while, huh? I tried calling you, but…”

“Oh yeah, I had problems with my other phone and I had to change numbers. I’m not good at memorizing them, so…”

“That’s fine, don’t worry… hey, how do you feel about getting some coffee? We could catch up…” Silvia offered.

“I can’t, Silvia,” Pepa said, finally stopping and turning to her, “I came here to work, and I’ve got lots of things to do.”

Silvia looked at her, surprised. Her attitude was clearly not the same. Pepa would have never rejected a coffee with her before, no matter how much work she had to do.

“Oh, ok… maybe later? You know where to find me…”

Pepa was no longer looking at her, but checking the paper work, “I don’t know, we’ll see,” she said, clearly no longer paying attention to Silvia. She turned around and started walking again, bumping into Gonzalo and giving him a big hug before walking away.

Montoya approached Silvia, smiling. “Good to have her back, huh?” he said, as he sat down on his desk. Silvia only smiled. This was clearly not the encounter she had pictured in her head for so many nights.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-

Silvia spent great part of her day in the CSI, running through her head the images of Pepa and how she had reacted in front of her, as if they barely knew each other.

She examined the blood samples she had in her hands, looking at them through the microscope and writing down every detail she found.

She felt the door open and then close again, but didn’t feel any steps. She looked up and saw Pepa leaning on the door, which was now closed.

“Hey!” Silvia said, leaving the pen aside and taking off her gloves as she approached her. Maybe now that they were alone she could give Pepa the welcome she thought she deserved.

“Silvia,” Pepa said sternly, causing Silvia to stop, “I need to run through this files with you. There are some things I don’t quite understand,” she said, handing her the paper work.

“Oh, ok…” Silvia replied, “do you have time right now?” Silvia asked, not sure how to talk to Pepa anymore.

“Are you busy?”

“No, I was just checking some samples and--”

“Ok, then now is just fine,” Pepa interrupted her.

Silvia took the files from Pepa’s hands and put them aside, taking away the excuse for Pepa not to look at her. “Pepa, what’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing, why?” she asked, frowning and still not looking at her.

Silvia took a step forward and tried to take her hands, but Pepa quickly put them in her pants. “Look at you, you are completely different towards me than the last time we saw each other.”

“Well, it’s been a while, so…”

“Pepa, I know you are mad at me because I stood you up, but I c--”

“That is not why I’m mad at you.”

“But see, you are mad at me.”

“No, that’s not…” Pepa sighed, “It seems like right now is not a good moment to run this through, so I’ll come back later, ok?” she turned around and opened the door.

“We can’t let this affect our job, Pepa.” Silvia said, frustrated, trying to reach her.

“We can’t and we won’t, but right now it’s not happening. I’ll see you later.” Pepa replied, and disappeared before Silvia could say anything else.

Silvia leaned on the table and sighed, while crossing her arms in front of her. She didn’t know if there was anything she could do to make things right with Pepa, but the truth was she was willing to pursue her until they worked things out, because she didn’t want to keep this type of relationship with the only woman she ever thought of kissing.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-

Later that day, Silvia walked into the tavern and saw Pepa sitting at the bar, talking to Lola.

“Hello,” she said as she took a place next to Pepa and faced her sister. “How are you Lola?” she asked.

Pepa looked at Lola, but felt Silvia’s gaze on her.

“I’m good, you? Had a good day?”

“Hm, yeah, lots of work.” Silvia said, looking at Pepa, who was still looking at Lola, who was looking at Silvia looking at Pepa.

“I’ll go and…” Lola said, not knowing a good excuse to make up to leave them alone, so she just left.

“Pepa, I-“

But as Silvia started talking, Pepa’s cell phone rang. “One moment,” she said as she answered it. “Hello? Oh, hey baby!” Pepa said, “Yeah, I got here okay… uh huh… I know… I miss you too…”

Silvia looked away, but paid full attention to the conversation.

“But we’ll see each other soon… sure we will… I told you I will go back on the week end… yeah, I’m here strictly for work… great, I’ll see you then… love you, honey… bye bye.” Pepa said as she hung up and looked at Silvia. “You were saying…?”

“Uh, I…” Silvia said, not even remembering what she was going to say before the cell phone rang. So, Pepa already had someone else in her life. Maybe that was why she left to begin with.

“Yes?” Pepa asked, raising an eyebrow.

Silvia realized it was pointless to try and “work things out”, apparently there was nothing to fix at all, Pepa had turned the page. Maybe they had never been on the same page at all and she had only been someone to play with, nothing special. Pepa just had the ability to make you feel as if you were the most important person in the world, but that didn’t mean it was actually true. It was time to move on, forget about everything and just go back to her life before Pepa, when being friends was the only idea to ever cross her mind.

Pepa watched Silvia as she just sat there quietly. She knew Silvia, and she knew she was wondering who had called, but she was not going to answer unless she asked, and they both knew that was not going to happen… at least not today.

“Do you want me to arrive earlier tomorrow to check the files?” Silvia asked, trying to keep the conversation at the back of her mind.

“Sure, you’ve got a late shift?” Pepa asked.

“Yeah, but I’ll get there an hour earlier and we can review it.”

“I’d appreciate it,” Pepa smiled at her shortly.

“Ok,” Silvia said, standing up. She felt like she didn’t have anything else to do there. “See you tomorrow then.”

Pepa looked at her as she walked away and sighed. She still liked Silvia, of course, being away three months hadn’t helped to forget about her, but there was nothing she could do to change things. The only thing she was certain about was not making the same mistake again.

“Where did Silvia go?” Lola asked when she came back.

“I don’t know,” Pepa shrugged, “Home I guess…”

Lola looked at her. “When are you guys going to talk?”

“Talk about what, Lola?”

“About what happened… you leaving from one day to another, never answering the phone…”

“There’s nothing to talk about, Lola.”

“Oh, please,” Lola said, “Let me remind you I’m her sister, and let me remind you sisters tell each other things, specially when it comes to big things in their lives…”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Lola sighed; she didn’t know who was more stubborn: Silvia or Pepa. “Never mind.”

Pepa stared at her and then shook her head. Lola didn’t know what she was talking about.

“I’ll see you at home, Lola,” she said as she gathered her things and left to get some rest.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-

That night, Silvia didn’t sleep very well. She tossed and turned in her bed, trying to close her mind and stop thinking about Pepa and whoever had called her, but it was impossible. She turned to one side and looked ahead through the window, watching as the leaves moved with the soft breeze and the stars shined repeatedly. She took a deep breath and sighed, trying to keep the tears from her eyes.

Why had she been such a fool? Why did she ever let herself believe that Pepa was into her, that they could have had something more… clearly Pepa was only playing with her, maybe she was used to having someone around her, and Silvia had been stupid enough to fall for her little games, to fall at her feet the first time Pepa had winked at her, to feel goosebumps the first time she had touched her. It had been all just a silly little game… and Silvia had felt flat for it. Was she ever going to learn from her mistakes? Apparently not.

But Pepa was so special… Pepa made her feel so special… and probably her girlfriend back in Sevilla too, the one who will be waiting for her on the weekend and who will get to spend each night with her, sleeping on the same… ‘don’t go there, Silvia, don’t go there’.

Silvia sighed, once again, for the billionth time that night and closed her eyes… it was really late and time for her to get some sleep… or at least try to.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-

The next day Silvia entered the police station an hour before her shift started to help Pepa with whatever doubts she had. She didn’t know what to expect out of this strictly professional encounter, although she knew she was going to come across an incredibly cold and rude Pepa who wasn’t even going to look at her in the eyes, let alone let her talk about anything else but work, but Silvia could handle it. Maybe she didn’t know anything about love, relationships and such, but if there was one thing she knew about was being professional… if she could handle working with Lucas after their break up, she could handle anything.

She looked around to see if she could find Pepa but no one had seen her. Silvia’s first instinct was to look for her in the shooting room and that was exactly where she was.

Silvia slowly opened the door and waited for Pepa to finish her round before interrupting her. When Pepa took the time to reload the Magnum, Silvia spoke up.

“Hola, Pepa,” she said softly, trying not to scare her.

Pepa quickly turned around, and her first intuition was to smile at her, like she always had, but stopped right before the smile appeared on her face and instead nodded at her. “Thank you for coming,” she said, remembering how to be polite.

Silvia smiled, pretending Pepa’s attitude didn’t bother her at all. “Where do you want to review it?” she asked, and looked at her in the eyes, trying to read her, but Pepa quickly looked away. Silvia refused to believe it was all happening this way… maybe they both made mistakes: Pepa played with her and Silvia fell for it, or maybe Pepa’s intention never was to make her feel this way and Silvia did anyways, but it didn’t have to be this way, both were grown ups and should be able to know how to behave.

“Is your lab ok? Maybe we won’t be bothered there.”

Silvia nodded. “Let’s go,” she said, and lead the way.

Once in the CSI, they both took a seat next to each other in front of the table and Pepa spread the sheets on top of it.

“Look, according to the files given to us at the hospital, here it says that Gonzalez’s time of death was at 9:50pm, but looking at your blood analysis, his blood cells had coagulated at least 24 hours before the corpse got her, which means he was dead before he even got to the hospital.” Pepa explained, pointing out the papers with the information.

“Exactly, that doesn’t make sense to me either… and rarely blood samples lie when it comes to things like this… so my theory is that they…”

“…made this death certificate up…” they said simultaneously. Silvia smiled, and Pepa did too. They stared at each other for a few seconds.

“Pepa…” Silvia said, whispering, “I…”

Pepa stood up, looking at her sternly. “That was pretty much my doubt, Silvia. So I’m not so out of line thinking this is fake,” she said, taking the files with her and pointing at the death certificate.

Silvia opened her mouth to reply, but Pepa was already on the door.

“Thanks so much for your help, Inspectora,” Pepa said, and left quickly before Silvia’s gaze… or smell… made her forget about the promise she had made to herself.

Silvia was left alone, sitting in the CSI, looking ahead, confused. What had just happened? Why did Pepa leave all of the sudden? She sighed… and decided sighing was her favorite sport of the week.
