Art for the Sutcliff Swap. G rated

I ended up painting a lot over the last couple of months- in 5 different fandoms. Since I've already posted the Underwater-SF-Supernatural-RPF art here (maybe that should count for more than one fandom?) here is the second set!

I finally painted for a fandom ACTUALLY set in Roman times (rather than using any excuse to paint an AU) for the Sutcliff Swap over at AO3 , for books written by Rosemary Sutcliff and got a lovely story for The Mark of the Horselord in return.

I had a lovely time painting scenes from my favourite Rosemary Sutcliff book "Frontier Wolf" for
sineala who offer lots of inspiring prompts. The AO3 links include some extra notes after the paintings with information about references. This was one of those occassions where I could have become very happily lost in the reference gathering phase.

The main picture comprises images from the final scene of Frontier Wolf, plus a few symbolic framing devices (the Ordo dragon standard and two hunting spears). "In the first-fading of the short winter's day, Alexios stood ... looking out northward along the line of the road." "In the First-Fading " at AO3

This bonus sketch is Hilarion (an amusingly snarky Centurion also seen lounging all over his commanding officer in the previous painting) clowning around with one of the fort kittens. "Mischief" at AO3

Finally, I did a very quick painting as thanks for a pinch-hitter. This is Phaedrus from "The Mark of the Horse Lord" with the hillfort in the background. Phaedrus is an ex-slave, ex-gladiator masquerading as a lost celtic King, in a story with shades of Prisoner of Zenda (I LOVE that trope!) "Red Phaedrus" at AO3
