Costume Inspiration

Final Fantasy X was first the first Final Fantasy I ever played and after playing most of the classics, it is still my favourite. I loved many of the settings, costumes and characters and it inspired me to make my first costume, way before I even knew what cosplay was. As my sewing skills improved over the years that I cosplayed several parts of this costume were re-made, with the final version worn in 2008.

Costume Debuted at: Ayacon 2005

Also worn at:  Amecon 2008 and the first Guinness book of records attempt for most video games characters in one place (Tate Modern, London)

Construction Details

The central part of this costume the obi, was made in three parts. A stiff base obi was made out of muslin and buckram, which laces at the side providing a sturdy base for the bow. The decorative obi was made from yellow satin and laces up at the back. The bow was made from the same satin, heavily interfaced and gathered into a wire frame. It slots into a pocket sewn in the under obi. All of the details were hand painted onto the obi and bow using acrylic paints.  This was finished off with a hand painted lotus flowers, beads, cord and tassels.

I used cotton sateen to made the sleeves and dyed a gentle pink gradient into them with dylon hand dye. Left over cotton sateen was used to make the top. The skirt was purchased from eBay and the pattern was painted on by hand, again with acrylic paints.

The staff was made out of wood for me by a friend, I painted it with acrylic paints and added a bell onto the the end of the handle.

Cost: £100

Time: 80 hours
