“I know what I’m getting him,” Sophie said when it was just the two of them. “How ‘bout you?”
Parker frowned. “For Nate’s birthday?”
“Or for Eliot’s.”
“He’s got a birthday coming up too?”
“No, not really,” Sophie said.
You’re weird. “Didn’t Nate say he didn’t want anything?” Parker asked, pretty sure she’d heard him correctly.
“He did. But that’s what they all say.”
“And they don’t mean it?”
“Of course they don’t.”
“Then why do they say it?” Parker asked.
“For the same reason people say ‘don’t follow me’ - they want to see who has the courage to follow them.
“Oh,” Parker said, and she thought…Nate owns Leverage. We agreed that he’s the boss. In some places, people would elect a king. So, if a man’s home is his castle… ignoring the slight headache she knew she’d get from these contortions, she continued onwards.
One Week Later
Nate walked in, unlocked his office door, and saw a Burger King crown sitting on his desk.
