Japan, Twisted

Mar 13, 2011 20:27

This image shows that a large section of Japan's Honshu island (the main part of Japan) has twisted toward the east, relative to the rest of the country:

The March 12 earthquake, now determined to be a 9.0, did a great deal of damage -- and then much more in the tsunami immediately following. The arrows are run together, unfortunately, in the middle section -- but they indicate a move of more than two meters (about eight feet) in the central area.

The two nuclear plants most in the news are right on the coast:

While it may have seemed foolish to locate nuclear power plants on a shore subject to tsunamis, at least these had access to seawater for emergency cooling. There are lots of details here with lots of discussion of those plants and resources.
