I keep this blog mostly as a record for myself and to share content I stumble across. I don't get as much traffic and interaction here, so I've been posting to Twitter more often. Over there I'm
@Punkintweets, feel free to add me. If you have a different username there, msg me to tell me who you are. :-)
My 2013-in-review isn't dramatic. I finished 9 graduate credits, worked, gained weight, got back into hiking, lost some weight, (while sick in December and over break probably gained a few pounds back), did work on the house, and read a few (non-academic) books.
In 2014, I am looking forward to graduating (although I won't walk until 2015, pbbt!), maybe sailing more than once next summer, and trying to get back into healthful eating and hiking after my holiday bender.
I'm excited to only have 2 classes left in my program, but already getting anxiety about being back in school while working full time. My last 2 classes I finished over the summer and it took up all my time even though I wasn't working!! This 3-day weekend I've been binging on home-made, tasty food, the last bits of Christmas chocolates, the last bit of eggnog, Trader Joe's pear cider, the wine everyone brought over, "fun" books and cheesy action movies.
There's still time to make a movie/TV streaming suggestion in my
poll, go on over! I'm hoping this course won't be one of those all-consuming courses and that I'll be able to take an evening off to watch tv with my husband once a week, but sometimes a bender helps me go off something.
This week I read
Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half book. It was really funny in places, I did laugh out loud, but it also gave a serious look into her experiences with depression, self-doubt, and emotional insecurity. I'd highly recommend it, but be warned, it doesn't end with one of her more mirthful posts. Luckily it's a collection of stories so you can read the last story first and end with one of her very amusing dog tales.
Yesterday I finished
George Takei's Oh Myyy! There Goes The Internet. I follow his Twitter feed and it was an interesting peek behind his rise as the avuncular, naughty, net-savvy presence he has become. This also was less a linear story than a collection of thoughts loosely organized by theme. Made me really happy I don't have a Facebook, though.
This week we watched Denzel Washington in Flight, which I thought would be an airplane movie. It wasn't. It was an A.A. commercial about hitting bottom, and taking responsibility. It was well-written, and well-acted, and A.A. is a wonderful thing, but it was not my ideal Friday night movie, be warned.
Last night we remedied that with a re-watch of
Skyfall. It's a good film--it stands up to a third watch. The second time we heard one of the commentaries, which was enlightening, but took you out of the "moment" in the story. It was nice to just get into the story and enjoy the ride. I love picking up the little hoyay moments from Javier Bardem, and now that we've seen all the old Bonds, had fun picking out nods to the cannon in the film.
After that we watched
Die Hard. I had seen one of the later ones, and liked it. It was an absolute trip to see Willis and Rickman so young and skinny again. I couldn't help seeing and hearing Snape in Rickman's bad guy. It was also funny to see all the phones with cords and other 80's things. My parents were very overprotective, so anything that wasn't PG in my youth, was right out. I can also appreciate them not wanting their tween repeating "Yippie Kai Yay, motherfucker" in the house. It was good, exploding fun.
