Just a Taste

I swear I'm going to get to writing my big giant post about college soon. (I've taken pictures of my dorm/study for you to see)
I may even have to divide it into like 3 different posts but I'll get there eventually.

So one of my classes I'm taking is 19th century European history, although we have not really gotten to the learning part yet I'm super ( Read more... )

I THINK Finland could possibly be pushed through... Maybe. Maaaybe. It's a bit iffy. Technically it was eastern at the time, yes, but from a modern perspective... Also Finland was autonomous. Culturally fudging I don't know, Finno-Ugric cultures and especially Finland are really wedged between the Germanic and Slavic branches. Don't know anyone who would call Karelian culture Slavic/eastern though. Then again Estonia is considered eastern, isn't it? Being a Baltic state. Although they prefer to be referred to as Nordic and culturally that does make sense considering Finnish and Sámi culture... Then again there are small Finno-Ugric tribes still living in Russia... And ow, now my brain hurts.

Maybe (HAHA) I'm biased, but I really think the Northern European national movements are so interesting. Case in point: Scandinavism and the Fennoman movement. Both are fascinating because they are basically about creating identities; in Finland's case from scratch, while in Sweden, Norway and Denmark it was a question of redefining their roots and common history, which is in itself so EXCITING. Nowadays Scandinavians take that cultural unity very much for granted I think, so reading about how people WORKED for it to become real in the past is an eye-opener to me as a Swede.

(You should though, I think. Don't want to write an essay with Finland and then find out it's not legit, right? Or alternatively, not write an essay about Finland and then find out you could have.)

I'm not sure. I'm excited about some classes but others are making me go eep. D:
I think a presentation would be good... Since I'm thinking of basically making a presentation of the historical progress of the Arthurian legends, from Middle Ages to their incorporation in modern media. Art should be included briefly at least. *Nods* Then again question is whether I'll have enough time, I don't know how long the presentation is supposed to be...
(I could open with a song from SPAMALOT)

But squishing cultures a bit after personal tragedy is probably really therapeutic! Although it is not going to make people sympathise with you. :'D

Thank you, I'm quite sure I need it. This was just the second day, we have barely started and I've already had a minor breakdown. :

True true, I just e-mailed my professor about it. I said "factional movements" and I'm not even really sure if that's a term. Oh well I hope he gets what I mean, or I just sounded really stupid.
*crosses her fingers and waits for a reply*
(I'm still reading that book/article though. I still need to rush out and get it because I found out Fridays and Saturdays are the only days it's closes early. WHY FATE!?)

Ow now my brain is hurting... Yeah at least you have grown up some what around there (sure as hell a lot closer then the Southern US) so you have heard a little bit more knowledge. For me I have to start from scratch, it doesn't help that all the rare history majors only seem interested in Tudor history with Henry VIII and his wives. I'm kind of alone in my love of Nordic history, none the less 19th century Nordic history. Most people who like the Nordics are more obesessed with vikings. Yeah it's interesting but not my forte. I'm more interested how the vikings/norse mythology was such a factor in Scandinavism and uniting random people. I mean the British for a bit were like, "OMG VIKINGS! Such badassery!"
(Even my Professor said that out of all the European areas the North was his least expertised. His studies are mostly in France and Italy)
Any movement where you trace back your history is interesting because it pops out all sorts of funding for new research, and even new acceptance toward ideas and the arts. A little bit a nationalism is good for the economy, but too much, yeah, no.

Now for school for you! I say don't sweat it but I understand how hard that is.
(Says the girl who gets panic attacks all the time)
You only have two more years till college or one more? It will hopefully go by fast and you get all those things figured out. Just think about those super exciting classes and do super well in them!
You're presentation sounds pretty boss at the moment especially if you keep with the Spamalot idea, muhahaha.

Some one please ban me from giving uplifting advice, because I really suck at it.

(What I'm trying to say is I'm rooting for you!)
