fandom angsting and moaning

I also posted The Eighth Tale on AO3 herePeople say I suck at summaries, so I probably didn't adequately explain that fic. It deals with timey-wimey and time paradoxes, possible futures that might also be possible fanfics, Harry/Draco sex, and then a sad ending. The fic was actually the summary of a fic that I'm not actually going to write, so I ( Read more... )

My experience with a lot of things:

I really like a writer and want to read their stuff, but I just can't. Can't because I'm not interested in fan fiction at the moment, can't because I'm not interested in the fandom, can't because I'm temporarily too busy.

I bookmark fics I want to read but can't for whatever reason, but then I never look at my bookmarks. I made it a little bit into that Angel/Spike fic you posted in the recent past because I wanted to read it, but I just wasn't feeling fandom at the moment. So I bookmarked it for later and I still haven't gone back to it.

It has nothing to do with writers or their ability or intrigue or the fic, I think. It's everything to do with the individual situation of each reader.

Stuff on LJ definitely is held back by its timestamp, but I've noticed that on AO3, I get hits whenever people are looking to read fic. Because AO3 is searchable in a way LJ is not, you just get much better exposure. However, HP fandom has practically no readership on AO3. My Merlin fic has over 1,000 hits. My HP fic with the most hits only has 34.

I've not read a ton of the must-reads in HP fandom. Most of the ones I've tried to read have been totally not my cuppa. I feel the same way about the so-called "good writers" in fandom. They write things that don't interest me. That doesn't make them bad, just as it doesn't make my taste bad. HP fandom is particularly full of prescriptive hoards, as we've discussed before. I just try to ignore it for the most part.

Definitely--I mean, my reading habits are really strange. Sometimes I won't read the authors I know I love, because I just don't want to deal with ALL THE FEELINGS. So then I just read things I know will make me feel nothing other than a general satisfaction.

However, it still has something to do with the writer. There are fics that I will start and totally just not be into because I'm not in the mood, but then I'll keep reading anyway because it really is just that good. And there will be some fics whose headers convince me that they are what I want, in spite of myself.
