Guess what...?! I got ACCEPTED to Berklee. Half of me says like... peh, big deal, I've been planning on going for a long long time now, one way or another, and I still have to wait half a year until I'm even gonna move out there ( Read more... )

When I was working at the Coop (bookstore), I was working 40 hours/week at $9/hour, and money was tight but enough. My rent is $550/mo plus $25-150 for utilities per month. At my internship, I'm now making $15/hour and I'll actually be able to save money--woo!

As for you ... it'll depend on how Berklee does financial aid. At MIT, they're supposed to give you enough finaid so that you can afford the cost of living. Usually, that covers dorm costs, but if you live off-campus it covers apartment costs. If Berklee does that too, and you get enough financial aid, then you'll be set. If not, you should save your money now so that you can pay most/all of your rent from savings. Then come summer, you'll have to save up enough for the following year, and so on.

You'll be able to do it. If thousands of other students can do it, then there's got to be a way. For the Berklee kids I met working with MassPIRG, their way was to have 5 roommates. $550/mo is really cheap for having one roommate, but if you can stand living with 5 others, then you can find a place for more like $300/mo.

And if Berklee doesn't give you enough financial aid, you or Mum can tell them it's your dream to go to school there, but you can't afford it unless they give you more financial help--you'd be surprised how often that works.
