If I looked you in the eyes
and I told you
that I could be everything you needed
You could not believe me
and I could not blame you
The world washed the stars from our eyes long ago
It laughed at our hope
It mocked our faith
It plundered our trust
And parted our dreams
Ceaselessly eroding us
Until most of us had fallen, though few had ever stood in the first place
Then it rewarded our mediocrity
It saluted our cynicism
It rewarded our selfishness
And encouraged our shallow, masturbatory gratifications
Until Wonder disappeared onto the pages of fairy tales
And we are left standing, face to face, with nothing to say
And nothing to feel
I blame It.
I hate It.
For stealing the truth from my words
