One of our New Year's Resolutions (or something, we don't get too formal around here) was to try to break out of some of our breakfast habits or rather to work towards having better options and better breakfasts.
We are sooooooo North American in the way we eat breakfast (usually fruits not veggies, usually sweet not savory, toast, eggs, toast and eggs, breakfast cereal, oatmeal). We don't have to eat like this but we do. We also have kids who would totally approve of a bowl of rice with fish flakes but we haven't gotten that brave yet.
Matt and I wracked our brains for easy yummy filling breakfasts that we weren't eating and came up with grits. Yep, Grits, which, it turns out, will actually make your bored-looking college-aged grocery checker talk to you about what you are buying (since he grew up in the south and loves them for a quick snack) Note to the Wegmans fans out there, we actually found the grits in the aisle with hot cereal, NOT in the "Southern Foods" section of the international section. (yes, the existence of the Southern Food section in the extensive international section makes me giggle)
We've now made grits and served them for breakfast once (Old Fashioned Grits in the crockpot, same way as I make steel cut oats overnight in the crockpot) We added lots of cheese and a small amount of ham. Everyone ate them and I can tepidly say I didn't dislike them. The ham bites helped a lot. I think they need to be a base for something for me. I can imagine liking a fried egg topping them. Possibly even with jalepeno. I'm willing to try them again and then if we are going to keep pursuing this, we think we'll purchase real stone ground grits which are supposedly better. Please share your favorite grits recipes if you have them.
I've also been a bit better at planning breakfasts (this last week - nothing to brag about yet) and making sure there is homemade granola and fresh bread on hand.
The current rotation seems to be:
crockpot steel cut oats with fruit
toast and fried eggs with fruit
granola with yogurt and fruit
puffed oven pancake (though some of us prefer to say it the way Elsie used to "puffinent cancake") with fruit
grits (with toppings)
homemade freezer waffles (with pb, fruit, etc)
stovetop old fashioned oats with raisins (and walnuts for me)
I've looked at the fancy unfamiliar grains for hot cereal (quinoa, anyone?) and I guess I could make muffins. But again, I'm not straying too far off the tried and true path of modern North American breakfast. I'm open to suggestions though, or reccomendations on which brand of fish flakes to buy.
