There's lots of good French films: 400 Blows, Breathless, Contempt, Tati's M. Hulot trilogy, Hate, Crimson Rivers, Irreversible, Brotherhood Of The Wolf, Irma Vep, the Three Colors Trilogy (Polish director, but all in French language), and many many more that escape my memory right now. The thing is that the French film industry is the only one besides the American film industry that has enough of a budget that they have a very diversified market, so they have the same crap to good ratio as American movies. But the good ones are really great.

Ha. No, I see your point, and the colors trilogy were good movies, but as you said, they had a Polish director.

In general though, French films annoy the shit out of me.
I didn't even like Brotherhood of the Wolf, which everyone else just swore by.

Holy goodness... I spy another fan of Krzystof Kieslowski!!! Trois Couleurs (Rouge, Blanc et Bleu) is by far my FAVORITE set of French films. Bleu is my favorite of the trilogy. Tish, it's amazing. You should most definitely see it -- I think you would adore it.

I had to search high and low for the soundtrack, as I just fell in love with the film and could NOT get the music out of my mind. It's phenominal. Really. :o)
