Thoughts on my first week...

My first week at my new job was quite fantastic. There were flowers waiting for me at my big C-shaped desk, plus a writing pad portfolio thingy full of company-related stuff, like a flyer on the group car insurance policy, and a page on how to order my business cards (!). My desk was full of more office supplies than I ever thought I'd need, courtesy of the Office Services department. My security badge was there, as well as a sheet with all my computer login info, passwords, voicemail stuff, everything I'd need to get myself going. It was amazing. I have never felt so welcome in a new job. At my temp job, it took them 3 weeks to get me set up with a computer ID, and even though I had a phone, my voicemail was never set up (by going through and doing something with settings, something that would have taken 5 minutes). Office supplies were hard to come by, and people usually went out and bought their own - you can see why I got excited about office supplies :). The 3 other Pension Assistants, our manager, and my training "buddy" (who is a Pension Analyst) all took me out to lunch. HR even came up to get me set up and settled with the phone system. That was all on the first day. Since then, I've had IT come up to do some orientation, and HR has come up again to give me a tour around the HR "Self Serve" stuff. Holy crap, I feel so well taken care of, and I've only been there for a week. I'm even doing actual work, I've been doing it since Tuesday!

There are some things that will take getting used to. For example, because we're a consulting company, I have to record what I do, because my hours are billable to our clients. If you work in a law firm, it's likely you do the same thing. Also, for a charitable donation of $20 each quarter, I get to wear jeans on Fridays. This is odd, because I'm not used to being able to do this in the corporate world. It's cool though, as long as I prove I've made my donation, they don't care who I donate to. I like this much more than being forced to donate to the charity of the company's choice.

It really does feel good to work for a company that seems to take good care of its employees. The only complaint I have is that I get paid in the 15th and last day of the month, instead of biweekly. It's not even really a complaint, it's more that it's another thing to get used to, and we'll have to work around it with the mortgage and stuff. But, other than that, no real complaints.

In other news, I have a new picture for a user icon, but I've made two different versions, and I can't decide which one to choose. So, I shall try to create a poll, and hopefully this will work :).
