I auditioned for Canadian Idol yesterday (Sat. Apr. 14th) at Dundas Square in Toronto. I'm getting close to the age cut-off (28) and I wanted to give it a shot while I could. I really had no idea what to expect, other than that there would probably be huge line-ups. There definitely were lots of people there. I think over one thousand people registered to compete that day.
Mike and I arrived at Dundas Square around 8:45am. The day was supposed to begin at 8am, but people were allowed to start lining up at 6pm. The actual registration for auditions didn't begin until almost 11am because there was a mini-concert of previous idols and Ben Mulroney kept telling the crowd be more lively for the cameras. :P I finally got registered with my number (08609) around 12:30pm. After that I was free to wander about. Not knowing exactly when my number was going to be called, I had to keep leaving the mall and coming back to the chilly square to check how the line-up was going. I finally joined the line around 5:30pm (way later than I expected).
I passed the first round and got a yellow ticket.
During the first round of auditions, we were taken in a group of 5 people to preform in front of producer judges. I actually made it past this round and got a yellow ticket, not because I have a strong voice, but because they liked the lyrics about Canadian Idol that I made up to the first part of Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid. It went like this:
Look at this place! Isn't it neat?
Contestants all lined up, and judges in seats.
Looking around here you'd think "Sure, they've seen everything."
They've seen rappers and rock stars aplenty.
They've seen cowboys and divas galore.
You want bad Britney covers? They've heard twenty.
But who cares? No big deal. They'll hear more.
But I want to be the next Canadian Idol.
I want to be the one that's up on centre stage,
Singing and dancing and listening to the crowd cheer.
This is my year! This is my time! I want to be the one to shine!
On CTV, I wish I could be the next Canadian Idol.
It was just after 7pm when I got my yellow ticket. Poor Mike was still waiting for me outside. I gave him a call, but I didn't know how long it would be before I got my one-on-one audition with a producer. It turned out that I wasn't seen until about 10:30pm. They were apparently running behind that day. After I had been waiting for an hour, they had to start turning the yellow ticket winners away for their one-on-one auditions until the next morning.
When I finally got to see the producer, he said that he hadn't heard anything so creative in a long time, that I was really warm person, and I was uninhibited in my singing, but I just wasn't vocally strong enough to go on. He said he didn't want to pass me on to the celebrity judging and go through all that trouble just to be turned away there. That was pretty much the result I expected of my audition. I just wished it hadn't taken so many hours to confirm my thoughts. :P
All in all, I'm really happy that I did take a chance and go out and do something different. I'm also happy that I had such a caring and patient person to experience it with me! Thanks again Mike! :D
