Hey y'all!
I just spent another lovely Friday Morning at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens! Today I was stationed at Manatee Springs! Oh. My. God. Those manatees were absolutely beautiful!
We currently have to young females named CC Baby (age 3) and Turner (age 2). They are so cute! SQUEE! CC was very active, swimming around the enclosure and checking people out. Turner was active till about 11:00, then she took a really long nap, waking up every 10 to 15 minutes to service for air. Apparently CC was orphaned and had to be raised in captivity, while Turner was a victim of cold shock and had to be rescued. For those who don't know, cold shock is what happens when a manatee gets to cold. They don't do well in water under, like, 65 degrees in temperature.
Both babies have made a full recovery, and will soon be released back into the wild. HOORAY!!!!!! I'm told that once they gain another hundred or so pounds, they'll be moved down to Florida and prepared for release. They're estimating for the move to take place sometime in October. It'll be sad to see them go, but they'll be happier in their native habitat, than in some aquarium. At least I'll get to see them a few more times before they go.
