Happy Saturday!
Today is whatever I want to talk about day. And I want to talk about light bulbs.
tl;dr: stop buying "soft white" lightbulbs.
The bulb in my favorite lamp burned out Sunday. I spent days researching what sort of bulb I wanted to put in it. It started off mostly just LED or CFL. Apparently normal light bulbs are legal in my state (not that I would ever buy them).
But I was also concerned about what sort of wattage I wanted, which I'm sure is a measure we're going to stop using soon. My old bulb was a 100w (well, it was a CFL, so it was 23), which is supposedly about 1600 lumens. So I was leaning toward at least a 75.
While I'm doing all of this research, I'm only looking at a variety of discount retailers none of which actually have any light bulbs working so you can easily compare. Then, I randomly decided to check my local lumber store. And I walked out with a light bulb. Daylight 60w (10.5w) LED.
Ignore the LED part, that's not important.
The important thing is that a Daylight 60 bulb can easily replace a soft white 100. A 100 is stronger than a 60, but Daylight is better quality light. It lights the room better. It's easier to read by.
Soft white light is noticeably yellow compared to daylight. I know it's a vast improvement over the light bulbs before it, but it's time we phased it out. Daylight bulbs provide better light at lower power. And if you need another reason to use Daylight bulbs, they may help with SAD.
