"Lankov effect"
My list of pseudo-academic terms is expanding thanks mainly to one particular person: my thesis adviser. Yesterday when all the super-pompous and self-centred old professors of my institute gathered in one room to bully the students who wanted just to get away with the presentations of the research projects with ease, my thesis adviser also attended this paramount [Spanish: mui importante] event. A. Lankov is known in the circles of politicians, scholars, journalists, experts and less than that, who at some degree are connected to the problematic issues of Korean peninsula, as eccentric, harsh yet insightful and knowledgeable academician who knows "the shit [German: Scheiße] he talks about."
So, the show started when he just entered the room: asking in Korean where he should better sit. Arrogant bustard [Korean: professor Park] in a rather sweet voice (the sweetest you can imagine professor is capable of speaking) kept addressing Lankov asking about his suggestions on students' reports. When it finally came to my presentation (which was 40 minutes delayed, and no one agreed to let me start before another student - regardless of other plans or appointments Lankov had), Park aired discontent with the length of handout I gave - the chart of one page. Succinct, to the point, and, come on! - pay attention to the presentation, do not pick holes in the text!
By the end of the presentation: Not much criticism, speeches to state personal importance, statements to puff up. Well, exactly the thing one would expect from old Korean professors who need to exert some power over others. And after: small talk about Lankov's background and career in Korean.
It wasn't a very significant event apart from the fact that my thesis adviser is the person I can respect, trust and rely on. One of a few cases here in GIP. [A sad statement]
