Fun thing to do for Earth Day...and all it costs is a few minutes of your cell phone time.
http://www.seventhgen.com/making_difference/earth_day.php Who benefits when I plant a virtual tree?
In some sense we all do because you’ve taken a step toward climate change education and emissions reduction through the planting of new foliage. The direct recipients will be the residents (both human and animal!) of the Central City neighborhood in New Orleans through the efforts of the Replant New Orleans team.
Two urban neighborhood gardens will be planted in Central City on Earth Day incorporating the idea of an urban food forest that can provide sustenance to both people and animals. The efforts of Seventh Generation will also result in additional tree plantings in privately-owned properties, contributing to the restoration of the urban forest in New Orleans. Did you know that New Orleans lost over 50,000 trees due to Hurricane Katrina?
Did you also know that Central City is known as a "food desert," meaning that very few grocery stores, restaurants, or healthy food sources are available to these residents? Planting food producing trees and vegetables will help alleviate this lack of access to food.
Every virtual tree can make a real difference in New Orleans’ Central City neighborhood on Earth Day, April 22, 2007. For each of the first 40,000 virtual trees “planted,” Seventh Generation will donate $1 to Replant New Orleans, whose volunteers will plant trees along with complementary shrubs, grass, flowers and vegetables. The $40,000 grant will also enable ongoing soil testing, educational outreach, organizational staff salaries and support for the 5,200 volunteer hours expected to keep the new forests and gardens healthy through Earth Day 2008.
