Ho-de-lay-ho-de-lay Ho-de-lay-hi-hoo

I watched the Carrie Underwood/Stephen Moyer Sound of Music, and like, *of course* it's not going to compare to the 1965 movie, which was shot on location in Salzburg, and is ingrained in our minds as a classic, but I was actually charmed by the snaffews that go along with a live broadcast and I have high hopes that this kind of thing happens again in the future. Not every couple of months or anything, but on Thanksgiving week, in or around, once a year? I'm enough of a musical theatre geek to get excited by that.

I was very upset to hear that Carrie Underwood was receiving *death threats* over her performance though. She's certainly not about to win an Emmy for her acting abilities, but her voice is so lovely (and so much fun on The Lonely Goatherd). And really, death threats?

And fyi, Julie Andrews did *not* originate the role, Mary Martin first played Maria on Broadway, and I found this, which I thought was adorable:

All this being said, it prompted me to OnDemand the 1965 movie, and I got all lost in that last night. Christopher Plummer is like, seventy-five levels of sexy in this role, and I remember thinking that from the first time I watched it when I was like three. I haven't seen it all the way through in a good number of years, but I love picking up on stuff that flies over your head as a child. Like, how are Max and Georg friends? Georg calls him 'Uncle Max', but they have different last names so they are not brothers. And he doesn't feel like the brother of the childrens' mother, because he's kind of mercurial about Elsa sending them off to boarding school. The patriotic nuns, gosh, that movie is just flat out fabulous.

Anyway, even though I failed at livejournal this year, I want to try doing that Holiday Talking Meme, though it's going to be shortened for my sanity.
