Well, would you look at you...

Happy New Year, one and all!

I spent last night in the house, by myself, making gravy, meatballs, chicken parmigiana, pork bracciole and baked ziti (which we call pasta-tray in my family) and went to bed at 11 o'clock. And it was exactly what I wanted to do. I think you should all just start calling me Nonna.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to see War Horse. Why do these things always come around right after Yuletide?

So this movie, as you can probably tell from the trailer, is an emotionally manipulative tearfest. I don't mean it's manipulative, as in, it's not good. It's just that I was sobbing my eyes out in public, pulling up the hood of my sweatshirt and going through fourteen napkins. Just to warn you all!

This was Steven Spielberg at his very best. In fact, see above (where are all the Albert/Emilie fics, which I'll get to in a second), I would love to read a fic of Dawson Leery at this age, maybe a bit hardened by Hollywood at this point in his life, going to see this and being taken back to an idyllic childhood in Capeside, MA. Epic in every sense of the word, gorgeously shot (every angle is absolutely beautiful to look at) and there was not one drop of sarcasm. The movie was all heart and love.

The scene where Joey (the horse) runs through an entire field of barbed wire was way too brutal for me to watch, and I had my hands clapped over my eyes, and I could hear everyone around me kind of gasping in horror. But I loved the scene that followed, though I know it's probably terribly unbelievable. I'm talking about Colin and Peter working together to free Joey and very pleasantly acknowledging that it must suck, on either side.

Okay, so let's talk about Albert and Emilie. Throughout the whole time when Joey and Topthorn were with Emilie, I was like, I wonder if Emilie is going to marry Albert in the end.

And then, at the auction, when the grandfather bursts through the crowd (and I loved that old man, I loved his pluck, his very quiet, dignified strength, and I loved his, "If you don't know what it is, you are welcome to leave it"), I was like, YES! EMILIE! ALBERT AND EMILIE ARE GOING TO FALL IN LOVE AND LIVE IN FRANCE AND MAKE JAMS AND HAVE TEN THOUSAND BABIES!

And then she DIED?

Oh, I know, casualties of war and sacrifice and war takes everything (Tom Hiddleston, and Michael and Gunther, and TOPTHORN) but Emilie DIES? Is this based on a true story (how could it be)? Did that HAVE to happen? And I could have sworn that when the grandfather was walking away, he shouted over his shoulder, "Emilie. Her name IS Emilie!" So I am going to take it that...she was very sick, but when she heard that her grandfather found 'Francois', she slowly started to get better and found a way to write a letter to Albert in Devon (we're Devon boys, yeah?) and they started to write back and forth and then he visited her in France, and THEY LIVED ON HER GRANDFATHER'S FARM AND MADE JAMS AND HAD TEN THOUSAND BABIES.

But yes, go see this movie. Bring tissues. And be prepared to cry a lot.

Also, I would love to get my hands on a dvd or something of Kit Harrington playing Albert in the West End.
