Yesterday the NZ red carpet premiere of the Tomorrow When the War Began movie was held at the cinema in Albany. Albany is my "local" movie theatre (and my local I mean it's about an hour away, but it's the closest mall to where I live).
The Tomorrow When the War Began series is a series of seven books written by John Marsden, and it's my favourite series of books. Most people in New Zealand and Australia know of the books and have read them. They are awesome and I grew up reading them, and they are one of those books that you always want to see made into a movie. And it's happened! Which is very exciting. So of course I couldn't not go down to stalk the red carpet yesterday.
I went down to Albany quiet early and bought the new Kathy Reichs book, along with the first season of Burn Notice. Then I went and saw Inception to kill a bit of time. It was really good and was very mindfucky.
I still had about three and a half hours left before the red carpet started (it started at half six), so I lurked around a few shops and then spent most of my time sitting in the food court reading my book (which is a lot of fun).
The red carpet was set up in the lobby of the movie theatre and there was also a little stage where a band played for a bit. People started to lurk around near the red carpet at about six and then we all just crept closer and closer to the red carpet. I ended up standing right next to the barrier down the end of the red carpet and had a pretty good view. There was quite a good crowd as well, although most of them had tickets to go and see the movie (I sadly did not have tickets), but there were a few that had come along just for the red carpet.
The media were all set up on the other side of the red carpet, the only person I really recognised was Drew from C4 and Jacqui from ZM was there as well. Harry McNaughton who plays Gerald on Shortland Street was hosting it. He is way less camp than he appears on tv and is really quite adorable in real life. But there was a band that played for about half hour as New Zealand celebrities came down to the red carpet.
There was Paul Henry and his daughters (one of which was in my class at school), quite a few people who I didn't recognise, Jay and Flynny from ZM which was quite cool because I always listen to them on the radio. Kimberley Crossman who plays Sophie on Shortland Street. She was really nice and came down and talked to a few us who were at the end of the red carpet. Also saw Faye Smythe (Tania on Shortland Street) and Ido Drent (Daniel on Shortland Street). Tim Balme was there as well, which was quite cool because I loved him when he was on Shortland Street and Mercy Peak. He was on Outrageous Fortune as a druggy the other week though which was a bit scarring. I'm really annoyed that my photo of him turned out really blurry though!
The director, Stuart Beattie was the first of the main guests to come down the red carpet first. Sadly all my pictures of him turned out crap or were of the back of his head. But he talked to all the media and then came over and signed my book for me. Oh yeah, in the morning I put a marker pen in my bag in case I had the opportunity to get autographs but I didn't think to put in anything for them to sign. So I ended up with them signing the back cover of my Kathy Reichs book.
And then Lincoln Lewis (he plays Kevin in the movie) appeared. The teenage girls in the audience got very excited at this point, he was on Home and Away for ages and a few of the people in the audience had come just to see him. He was really nice though (and so cute!), he took his time to go down to the red carpet and sign things and take photos with everyone. He was the last person on the red carpet and the organisers were trying to get him to hurry up. But I did get his autograph which was awesome!
Caitlin Stasey who plays the main character Ellie, was also there. She was really nice as well and when she autographed my book she looked at what it was she was autographing and laughed. She was quite amused by it and showed Stuart and then we had a talk about how my copies of the Tomorrow series were falling apart and she told me that her copy was an old library copy she got from her ex-boyfriend.
Now, photos! My camera isn't the best for shooting indoors and the lighting was quite bad, plus it was really hard to get good shots because there were heaps of people and people's heads in the way. But here's some of the better ones I got.
