My Weekend: The Melting Pot & Jackass 3D

Oct 20, 2010 07:25

I want to get to the good stuff before I start in with the bad, so here goes nothing.

This past weekend was a really fun one. Though we had planned to just be lazy and lay around the apartment doing nothing but letting our brains melt to jelly while watching television, we instead ended up going out to an early dinner on Saturday to The Melting Pot in Burlington, MA. There are two words that I can use to describe this experience and they are “absolutely delicious.”

We had wanted to try the restaurant out for the longest time, having seen commercials and ads for it everywhere and just loving the idea of fondue everything! It was reconfirmed after Zach gave it rave reviews just for the dessert after going there with his now ex-wife. Coming into an extra pocket of cash for the week we decided to just go for it, and I’m glad we did.

The restaurant opens at 4:00p on Saturday, so we called a little before that and made reservations for 4:15 just in case. We’ve been told they can fill up quickly and we definitely wanted a table as soon as possible! Getting there just a few minutes after opening we were seated right away. I love the way they have their seating set up, even though it tends to cause a maze like feel to the layout of the restaurant, even just in finding the bathroom and back.

Our waiter was… interesting. He was pleasant and he definitely knew his job inside and out, which we benefit from as it was our first time and there are rules, people! I’ll get to those later. Our waiter had an unusual name which I don’t remember now, and though he smiled pleasantly and often enough, it never quite reached his eyes. We weren’t sure if this was because he was jaded and just good at his job, or if he was exhibiting the classic symptoms of a sociopath (unable to feel emotion, but able to mimic it). Or at least this is what we entertained ourselves with in between the times he left the table and reappeared again.

So the rules: You use the skewer for cooking and dipping purposes only and are not supposed to eat off of it, but I decided to not follow this rule for the cheese and dessert. What fun is it to dip and not eat off the same stick? With the entrée, because of the raw meat you receive to cook in your chosen broth or oil, it is recommended that you do not eat off the skewer and also to not put the cooked meat on the raw plate or vice versa. Reasons for this are obvious, and so I followed the rules to a T.

I decided on the Pacific Rim plate, which included two vegetable pot stickers, two white shrimp, and four pieces each of duck, teriyaki steak, chicken, and pork loin. In addition to this Christine and I also shared broccoli, mushrooms, and potatoes, all of which was cooked in a vegetable broth the waiter brought out in a mini pressure cooker that looked like a torture device.

Of course, next came dessert, which I had a coupon for after signing up for their Fondue Club, or whatever they call it. It was emailed to me, and you only get one per email so next time I go I will have to do it again. Sorry, but free is free and I will get it however possible, and it is a $20 value.

My only complaint was after we were all set with dessert the waiter disappeared. Christine had asked for a glass of water, which never came, and he never returned to pick up the check. However, we were saved by the roaming manager who took it for us and made sure we were all set afterward, and this is after he first came over to say hello when we were just on our appetizer.

To rate it out of 5, I would give it a 4.5 and only because of the lack of service after we were finished eating but hadn’t yet paid and because of the maze-like quality of the layout. We have decided that if we happen to come into another small windfall of cash, we will be doing it again because it was an amazing experience. My first time trying duck and I was in love, only knowing how well to cook it because of our obsession with the Food Network and their shows like Iron Chef, Chopped, and Good Eats.

This moves us onto Sunday, our lazy day if you had asked us on Saturday. However, we settled in and watched Jackass the Movie, which only made us want to see Jackass 3D all the more. So we did that, using Christine’s movie passes she received for her birthday and had to cash out only an additional $8. Though I wish it had been free, I can’t really complain too much about only paying $8 for two people to attend a 3D movie as they usually range up to $15 per person.

Can I just say that this movie is everything I had hoped for? It really was and it didn’t disappoint! I’ve heard complaints that there wasn’t enough 3D, but after dildos being shot at you and a Port-O-Potty unleashing it’s nastiness as it drops 5 stories, do you really need more than that? Especially after the up close and personal views in first-person shooter style of Bam’s male anatomy, I was all set. Besides the Rocky 1-4 was amazingly priceless and funny each and every time they did it.

The end offered an amazing treat of looking back through the years to the beginning of Jackass and featured baby pictures of all the guys, even those behind the scenes. However, to see how much they’ve aged since the beginning, especially Johnny, was slightly depressing. He looks weathered, definitely, but still good for his age, which I think is hitting close to mid-40s if he hasn’t already.

Much like the end of the movie, I think I’ll end it on a good note as well, not delving into the every day stress that seems to only increase as we creep closer and closer to the full moon on Friday. However, I don’t know what people’s excuses are for being crazy for the other 30 days of this month, but I don’t like it.
