Sunday Sundries 59

01. This past week I put up a new community directory post. Our old community directory was from 2008, so I thought we were due for an update! The post is members only, so if you're only watching the community, it won't be visible to you -- you have to actually join to see it. If you're interested in creating an entry for yourself, the community directory can be a great way to make new friends on LiveJournal and other sites.

02. Alex Chilton of the band Big Star passed away this past week at the age of 59, just days before Big Star had been slated to reunite at SXSW. Both my boyfriend and I are huge Big Star fans and were crushed by the news of Chilton's passing. We both felt that Big Star is a band that most people love -- they just don't know they do. Big Star's songs were covered by Elliott Smith, The Lemonheads/Evan Dando, and numerous others. A cover of their song "In the Street" was even used as the theme for That Seventies Show. Pitchfork posted videos for some of Big Star's best known work here and collected reactions from artists and friends of Chilton here. My favorite response comes from Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney who says, "Musicians and fans have always passed around Big Star songs and albums like a secret handshake. When you found out someone hadn't heard #1 Record or Radio City, you were so excited to provide that missing link, to pass on all the glimmer, the jangly guitar, the big chords, the melodies, the American anthems that let you keep your teenage self -- for some of us long since faded -- close, etched upon your skin. And suddenly, you realized that every great band or musician you love also loved Alex Chilton and Big Star."

03. Tomorrow I'm going to go to the grocery store & get the ingredients I'm missing for these vegan root beer float cupcakes. I can't imagine a sweet that's more up my alley.

04. On Friday I had the pleasure of seeing Kitten Forever play a short set at the Blue Arrow, a local used record store. The girls were awesome & if you're into punk, I highly recommend giving them a listen!

05. Via skafunkmelt, The 10 Best YA Books for Adult Readers (which includes favorites of mine by Sherman Alexie and John Green, as well some books I just full-on hated, like Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) and Our 35 Favorite Music Moments in Film (can I just say how much I love the fact that "Sugarhigh" from Empire Records is on this list? That whole movie is full of great music moments -- I especially love the scene with "Seems" by Queen Sarah Saturday.)

If you'd like to submit something to the Sunday Sundries, just comment on this entry.
