Five years ago, we got a POD. We put a lot of stuff in the POD, including a beautiful antique Deco armoire and dresser that I won in an auction. I had put an IKEA one in the bedroom because it had shelves and held more stuff, and besides, we had a lot of other stuff to put in the POD.
Things moved in and out as needed, since we were still finishing upstairs and changing bedroom furniture for the kids and so on. We offloaded a lot of pieces along the way, slowly emptying the POD. Finally, we got it down to where it was a few items: the old crib that can't be donated because it's a drop-side, a kitchen table, our beautiful stainless steel, sharp-cornered coffee table from our old loft life, the armoire.
"What in the world are we going to do with that huge thing?" we asked ourselves. I didn't want to get rid of it; I love it and it is one of my favorite auction pieces. It has secret compartments. How can you not love something with secret compartments? But alas, we had nowhere to put it. After a point, we were pretty much paying $90 a month just to store this armoire. We finally couldn't stand the ridiculousness anymore and were going to move it to my parents' basement a few months back, but then needed a pickup truck and the weekends became full of tournaments and so on and we just kept paying to store the armoire. Yesterday, Pete decided once and for all to get that damn armoire out of the POD, so he figured he'd put it in the shed for the time being until we could borrow a truck.
Coincidentally, we had put a big wall-hung coat rack in the front room years ago, but it never really held all the coats. It always bugged me how untidy the front room was, bags of hats and scarves vying with coats for space, kids dropping roller skates in there, the pile of bike helmets. If only we had a coat closet.
And lo, as we're standing there talking about whether the armoire will fit in the shed, we shared a dawning realization.
We had no coat closet.
We had an armoire without a home.
We are stupid.
For FIVE YEARS we have been storing our coat closet in a rent-controlled apartment. In FIVE YEARS it never once dawned on either one of us that if we just put the armoire IN THE FRONT ROOM WHERE THE COAT RACK WAS, we'd have a coat closet. Five. Years.

Great minds think alike, and sometimes ours don't think at all. Now, I need to figure out where to put a piano.
