Sooo in band practice today, my band director handed out this really awesome piece to sight read for fun. We'd read it once before last year, and I remembered really liking it, so I got excited to play through it. I've never been a very strong sight reader because I'm a perfectionist and I get afraid to play out and make mistakes. But I dunno what it was today, I was really relaxed and just happy to play, so I wasn't too fussed with mistakes, I figured I'd be lost half the time anyway.
So we start the piece and get to a pretty tricky part: (it's the flutes at about :55, listen, it's really cool!) and to my surprise, I end up the only flute trying to play it, and I absolutely NAILED it. My director cut off the band, stared at me for second and asked, "did you just SIGHT READ that?" I got all red and nodded, and then the whole wind ensemble stars whooping and clapping and yelling "go krista!"
It was really nice because I've never really had a beast moment, and I never really get singled out by my director for playing well, but I always work really hard and play my best. It was great to actually get acknowledged and praised for doing something well. My band director is a really good person, and he believes in an uplifting atmosphere for players. And my classmates in wind ensemble are really wonderful people, very supportive and they're all such good players. I'm sorry if this is a bit tl;dr or seems silly, but it really reminded me of why I love my band, my director, and playing so much. :)
