Two weekends ago, in my ancient Jeep Cherokee*, I intrepidly drove north towards the border with Guinea to investigate the Salone's Kilimi-Outamba Wildlife Park. A, my Sierra Leonean roomate, flat out refused to believe me when I told him that there were both hippos and elephants in his country; sadly, due to a fire last month in the national park ( Read more... )

the hippos were cool - sadly we only saw them swimming around, they didn't get out of the water! (too hot.)

I would try and emphasize the incredible diversity throughout Africa - one of my all time pet peeves is when people talk about it as if it is just one place!

I think it is also important to emphasize the common stereotypes used by white media / entertainment ... get kids to think about why, for example, so many movies that theoretically focus on "Africa" are really just stories about white people (um, Blood Diamond/DiCaprio?)

are you getting anyone from the different African communities in Winnipeg to come in?

good luck! :)

I have been trying to contact people, but I have been having a difficult time getting confirmation, or just ahold of anyone...do you have any connections anywhere??

I'm not really connected to the African community in Winnipeg - have you tried the cultural associations? There are a few grocery stores on Ellice, I think, which might have posters for cultural events ... sorry this isn't so helpful!
