not exactly the Serengetti ...

Two weekends ago, in my ancient Jeep Cherokee*, I intrepidly drove north towards the border with Guinea to investigate the Salone's Kilimi-Outamba Wildlife Park. A, my Sierra Leonean roomate, flat out refused to believe me when I told him that there were both hippos and elephants in his country; sadly, due to a fire last month in the national park, I was unable to locate any elephants as they've fled across the border. They are are not expected to come back until the fall, after rainy season.

Anyway, in order to discover this, I drove across a very scary pulley-operated ferry:



where I met some extremely funny kids:



and some pretty funny adults:



before finally seeing some (look closely) hippos!



* My car is so old that, if it were a person, and in Canada, it could drink legally. Although I think the drive - most of which was over terrain that only loosely resembles "road" - may have done something bad to the suspension, there is no end to my amazement that we made it home in one piece!
