I'm totally Mongolian Chop Squad Becked up. :D
Seriously, me and my sis watched the five released DVDs consecutively yesterday (and partially re-watched some today). THE MUSIC ROCKS!!! I've listened to both the original soundtrack and the dubbed music...and they're BOTH really good.
I know. Jawdrop.
Even if things are a bit more polished in the "Japanese" version, the "English" is actually a bit easier to watch for the anime. Since almost all the songs are already sung in English, the "Japanese" version gets a tad distracting for native English speakers because of its rampant Engrish and accented pronunciations--you can't help but smile at the great effort being put into the songs. They're great, but that doesn't mean they don't sound funny. The dub, the singing is pretty good (the girl, Maho, kicks ASS--Brina Palencia--and the boy, Koyuki, is pretty damn passable--Greg Ayres--and both are reasonably close to their Japanese counterpoints)
Listen to the bass. So fucking nice. XD It's like instant love. The character that plays the bass...he's all right, but damn, I would love to meet the musician behind the scenes. All of them. The guitars are so niiiiiiiice.... :D :D :D
And what's really yummy, is how they animate fingers moving on the strings of the guitar. ^____^
There are a lot of really nice rock influences. R.E.M., U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, etc. The song "Face" distinctly reminded me of U2's "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own." And I really like the "famous" band Dying Breed's songs.
Chiba, the lead rocker/rapper, is a fucking clown but I love him.
Eric Vale voices the dub Ryuusuke (lead guitar/rebel). I about flipped a fucking gasket when I found that out. YUKI SOHMA. AS RYUUSUKE. WTF. The Japanese Jimmy Page. Surprisingly, he does pissed off really well. "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!!" and "I'm fucking injured over here!" just sound so nice coming from him. XD
(But I have a question: what the fuck kind of older brother gives out condoms to guys hanging around his little sister?)
Apparently, there's more swearing in the dub than in the subtitles. This amuses me greatly. Rated TV-MA, they aren't kidding. The f-bomb flies around like crazy, but that's the way I like it. I would never believe a story about a coupla kid rockers who never curse. The actors sound comfortable enough with their lines, so it's not stupid sounding.
I kinda wish there were a few more songs in there for a tad more variety, but their songs are good and catchy. There are also a lot of different versions of the same song (different singers, acapella, performance-style, etc).
Now if only we could get the main character to grow a pair and not be SUCH A BITCH!!!!!!!! He's the kind of guy whose ass I'd kick because he's such a pussy. I'm not saying he's gotta go out crazy Bruce Lee-style. It doesn't take a big man to stand up for himself. Sometimes all it takes is walking away. PANSY ASS BITCH!!! Saku's the same size as him and he doesn't take other people's shit.
I think Saku's my favorite character. He's the band drummer and seemingly only school friend of main character Koyuki. He's so damn nice!!!! And yet, as easygoing as he is, he doesn't take shit and fights back. He's "his own person" even if it means having to defend himself from assholes.
The chick Maho, Ryuusuke's little sister, is pretty kick ass. Your introduction to her involves her cursing LOUDLY at a couple of asswads trying to pick her up. From then on, she's bad ass, playfulness, and attitude. :D A particular favorite of mine is when she grabs what I think is a microphone stand and just wails on Koyuki's face. Not in a cheesy anime way, but in a "I'll bash your fucking head in" kind of way. YES!!! Speed and weight.
I admit to being a little behind on the manga releases, but they improved the art for the anime and DUH, added bonus of actually hearing the so-called "great songs" everyone is always talking about.
Do yourself a favor and check Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad out. XD
Here's a nice site with introductions to the characters and you can even listen to the Japanese soundtrack!!!
Beck Mongolian Chop Squad on Friendster!
Damn, it's been NONSTOP music for the past three weeks. I was singing like crazy on my Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol (managed two perfects :D), brushed up on my Guitar Hero (finally played my untouched Rock the 80s and beat it in a single night), rocked out to Rock Band with my brothers alternating between drums, guitar, and vocals...except now they've designated me to guitar, so I may quit the band seeing as how I dislike the guitar controller and would much rather be playing GH anyway...went to the karaoke bar and was reminded how much I enjoy listening to amateurs sing as well as make an ass of myself doing throaty renditions of Meatloaf (
renatamcfarland, I needed you! You're the only other one I know who can rock it out to Meatloaf hardcore!), stumbled onto the Irish rock movie/musical Once, and finally, have been watching and rocking out to Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad -- the anime AND the music.
I'm probably forgetting something, but the point is: I had no idea I was so obsessed with music. Like, damn. This coming from the person who quit saxophone and left band. Twice.
