So, it's my first year in medical school, and I would like to think that by the time I graduate in four years I can still legally provide essential services for my patients. I shouldn't kid myself though, because obviously non-medical politicians should make those kinds of decisions for me and my patients.
I'm so angry that South Dakota actually passed (in the Senate) its bill making any abortion illegal except to save the life of the mother. NO exceptions for rape, incest, or a woman's health (only her ultimate life). That is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. I can't wait to go to the Med Students for Choice conference in a few weeks and hear from the brave physicians who performed abortions before Roe v. Wade. Because that is what it's going to be like again in my lifetime. What am I supposed to do if a young girl comes to me who has been raped and now suffers and unwanted pregnancy that will forever alter her life and remind her of what happened to her. I'll turn her away because a "moral" government tells her to deal with it, with no help from them.
