And here is a rant about patriarchy and fridging and how angry TV makes me.

I've been up half the night with a sick kid, so this will probably make next to no sense, but whatever. I'm going to say it anyway.

I've explained here how I'm watching Touch this season, not because I ever expected it to be an objectively good show (thank goodness I didn't expect that, hee), but for the hot Kiefer and because I found out that Annie would be guesting and I wanted to know what was going on when her ep came up. And mostly that was all well and good until last night (although as I said, last week's ep was just TERRIBLE on ten million levels).

Last night, they killed off Maria Bello's character. I knew that she was leaving after the eighth ep, but because apparently I am colossally stupid, it never occurred to me that they would KILL Lucy. I assumed that she would find her daughter, given that the search for Amelia has been the central plot point of the entire season, and then they would disappear somewhere. And for about five seconds, it seemed as if that was the plan. But then shazam, in a scene that broke my heart even though I have exactly zero investment in these characters, Lucy and Amelia get trapped, Amelia uses her magical mind powerz to explain that there is no way out for both of them but there is a way out for just her, there are lots of tears, and Amelia runs away from the car, only to hear the sound of the gunshots that kill her mother a minute later.

I just.

Does Kiefer hate women? No, I'm quite serious. There are ten million other ways the exit of Maria Bello's character could have been explained. Choosing to kill her so that Kiefer can look sad the next ep is pathetic. It's lazy, derivative, and pointless. What's more, it reduces Lucy's character to nothing more than a plot point. Apparently there was also an awkward kiss (I got interrupted at that moment, but I'm sure a .gif of it will turn up on tumblr soon) just to make sure it was clear that there was some sort of romantic attachment between Lucy and Martin before Lucy got whacked.

This ENTIRE season has been about reuniting Lucy and Amelia. The show leads the reader to want this outcome, to look forward to the time when this poor mom (I mean she was always a badly written character, but that's not the point of this diatribe) could be back in the same physical space with the child who was taken from her three years ago. And when this happens, they get to share a hug and maybe ten sentences of dialogue, and poof! Lucy is dead, Amelia is devastated, and Kiefer has more reasons to look JUST LIKE JACK in next week's episode.

Fuck the fucking television.

In addition, as adrenalin211 pointed out last night, Kiefer has basically turned Martin into Jack. He has all the same tics now. The constant heavy breathing even when there's not a reason, the repetition of the same line while yelling just in case the hapless person he's yelling at missed it the first time, and etc. Combine this fact with dialogue that is almost unbearable to hear, and you can figure why there are probably approximately a hundred people left in the world watching this show.

Annie's ep is next week (I just saw your post about that, marinw!), and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to it, because I am. As everyone who has ever met me on the internet knows, there is nothing I love as much as her and Kiefer sharing the screen. I am just really really really angry at TV right now, and at fridging, and at the fact that in 2013, nobody can figure out a way to write a female character off that hasn't been done four million times.

This rant has been brought to you by NO I'M STILL NOT OVER RENEE FUCKING WALKER AND I NEVER WILL BE, BITCHEZ.

In news unrelated to ranting:

+++ I got two new bottles of super cool new nail polish, which is nifty because having painted toenails is the only thing I like about summer.
+++ Habanero cheese is delicious.
+++ My Norman Reedus problem is not improving at all. And I really don't want to watch TWD. CONUNDRUM.

Happy Saturday, you guys. What's going on?

tv, fuck the fucking writers, tv fail, touch
