baby_k21).

A light breeze blew across the back lawn as Lisa stepped from the house into the shadowed dusk. Ernie was still inside, no doubt having been cornered by his mum, but Lisa had managed to slip away. There was something that needed to be said.

She could see Sorcha sitting underneath one of the massive trees, her shoulders hunched and her body practically vibrating with bottled anger. Taking a deep breath, Lisa summoned all her courage and walked up to her.

"Hi."

Sorcha glanced up at the blonde, anger dancing in her blue eyes. "What do you want?" she practically spat out at her.

Lisa inwardly cringed, but she didn't back down. "I need to say something," she said, willing herself to be strong.

"What?" the other woman said. "What could you possibly have to say right now? Haven't you done enough damage?"

"Damage?" Lisa echoed incredulously. "Ernie loves me, and I love him more than anything. How is that damage?"

"Because," Sorcha exclaimed, jumping to her feet, "you're not right for him!"

"In your opinion," the blonde said calmly. "Your brother thinks differently." She held her left hand up, the diamond in her ring catching the light radiating out from the house. Sorcha's lips tightened, but she didn't say anything.

"Despite what you may think," Lisa continued, speech slightly rushed before she lost her nerve, "I love your brother, and I can't imagine my life without him. And in eight months, we're getting married. I'm not going anywhere, and I'd like to be your friend if you'll let me. But the sooner you accept the fact that Ernie and I are not breaking up, the sooner you can let him be happy."

She let out a shuddering breath as she finished her speech, and glanced back towards the house to see Ernie's silhouette in the doorframe. She took one last look at Sorcha, and gave her a small, wry smile.

"Good night," she said before turning back towards the house, back to Ernie and her future.
