Is this the slowest week I've ever had at work? Quite possibly.
This week's challenge: Make an alien beauty queen to compete in an intergalactic beauty pageant. Each designer had a type of galaxy to use as their inspiration, and, hilariously, they awarded the winning look a crown and a sash and everything.
Julian,
Whirlpool Galaxy:
There's no denying that she's pretty, and the judges liked the elegant simplicity, but I feel like this one just isn't enough somehow. I also can't say that I see much whirlpool galaxy in this look, but no one besides me seemed to care about that. Still, the face sculpt is beautiful, so he was on the top.
Adam,
Cigar Galaxy:
I think this one should have won, and if I can find a picture of her profile you'll understand why. This was obviously a ton of work, the colors are impeccable, and the profile is just stunning. I've seen a lot of people on Face Off try to achieve that lava-skin look, and most of them fail where Adam succeeded wonderfully. The judges really liked it, but apparently not enough for it to win.
Here's at least a partial profile:
She looked a bit like a
lion fish, and I mean that in the best possible way. I would 100% buy a MH doll with this look. Surely there's some kind of lava demon Mattel can work with, right?
Darla,
Sculptor Galaxy:
I just don't see that much special here. The judges were gaga over it though, and I guess she's pretty enough. I think they said it had very different forms than what they usually see?
Although, to be fair, her head (also) is a lot cooler in profile than from the front:
I like her weird arms/tentacles, but I'm not crazy about the thing on her neck.
Ben,
Andromeda Galaxy:
I definitely thought this one was the worst. Her mouth looks all pinched, I'm not sure if those things on her head are meant to be eyes or not (but they sure don't look like eyes) and I don't like the shapes or the colors. But the judges found something redeeming in it, because Ben was safe.
Kelly,
Sombrero Galaxy:
Oh Kelly. I don't even know what was going on with this look. I like it better than Ben's just because it looks more like she was trying for a beautiful look, but the colors are heinous. (They're even worse when you see the purple tentacles on the back of her head). In the end, the random tentacles coming from her ear area, and the paint job, and the weird head shape, were enough to send Kelly home. :(
Here's a closer shot of her weird ear tentacles:
The judges freaking HATED them, but I don't think they're that bad. It's mostly the colors that I don't like.
