To Jerry Butler, wherever you are

I guess I should make one thing clear right off the bat. I mean the porn star, not the singer. I don't know much about the singer. The porn star, though, is always going to be someone kind of special for me. No, not like that, get that one out of your heads right now. I guess he's kind of what you'd call mine and Golumette's mentor and role model, ( Read more... )

Yes, ma'am, his mother. I don't know whether you ever actually knew her or his dad, not many kids did, because he avoided ever bringing any friends home, because they both seriously put the funk in dysfunctional, even by Craptown standards. They were both alcoholics with serious mental problems, and his grandmother was the only sane force in his life. He told me after we'd met again as adults that she was the only real reason he ever lived past the age of five, and if not for her, he'd have died of abuse and/or neglect long before that.

His mother was also a heavy user of dope, including heroin, and his father was an abusive skirt chaser who beat the hell out of him and his mom all the time, although to the best of my knowledge, he never hit the grandmother. He frequently stayed out all night, sometimes for a week or more at a time, and his mom would usually climb into bed with him then. He said the first time he clearly remembered knowing what was going on was when he was six, but he was sure it had been going on a lot longer, probably from day one. But he remembers when he was six, he realized what was going on, and that it was wrong, and it creeped him out. So he told her he didn't want to do it any more. Then the next day, she tried to O.D. herself, almost successfully. And that was the last time he ever resisted her.

But then when he was about 7, his dad came home unexpectedly one night and caught them together, and he beat the hell out of him. And that was kind of the turning point in their relationship, when his father started hating him and wanted nothing to do with him. And he frequently beat him pretty badly, to the point where he'd end up out of school for a few days, and when he'd come back, he'd be very quiet and subdued, and a lot of times he'd have various bruises and such, but he'd just vaguely say he'd fallen or something. Which virtually nobody ever questioned back then, especially with a rowdy, rough and tumble kid like he was.

Did I ever tell you what really happened when he finally got sent up?

I love this, she responds to everyone but me. ;-P

Seriously, I wish you'd tell all of us about that, because I don't think any of us ever knew. Mixter and I both knew he got sent up, but we never knew much about why. And I can't speak for anyone else, but I thought he was a damned good man, and I always wished I could of gotten to know him better. There was just something real likeable about him, even when he was busy being a hardass. We kind of clashed a little when we first met, but we eventually got along okay, once I realized how damned sharp and basically decent he was. He seemed to break a lot of rules when he had to, but he was better then most at doing the right thing in the end.
