6 Months Later…
“I’m heading to work, Joel!” Benji yelled as he started for the door of the small apartment in Santa Monica, California.
“Wait!” Joel rushed out of the kitchen. “You forgot your lunch!”
“Don’t you mean dinner?” Benji joked glancing at the clock on the wall in the tiny living room.
“Naw, I mean lunch,” Joel smirked. “You’ve lived your life on 2nd shift Benj: never waking before 2pm, so for you, dinner, is always lunch!”
“Yeah and who was always on time for school, the school bus, church…”
“Me,” Joel lied, smiling.
Benji rolled his eyes, but smiled back. “Whatever. Are the guys still gonna have that practice session tonight?”
“Yep, and I have your part ready to go,” Joel showed Benji the tape they had recorded.
“I wish I could be there in person,” Benji sighed.
“You will,” His twin promised. “Very soon. We are gonna get signed, I can feel it, and you’ll never see the docks again!”
“And you won’t have to ask ‘paper or plastic’ anymore either,” Benji added, referring to Joel’s job at the supermarket.
Joel nodded, his eyes bright and happy. Benji would never be able to get enough of seeing his twin so carefree and full of life. Reaching out he pulled him into a hug.
“I’ll miss you,” Benji said softly as Joel squeezed him back.
“Same,” Joel pulled back slightly. “But tomorrow we are both off…and you know what tomorrow is, right?”
“Saturday?” Benji teased knowing full well what his twin was hinting about.
“Okay, fine if that’s how you want to play it,” Joel said slyly. “I’ll just keep your Birthday present for myself.”
“Aw c’mon,” Benji pleaded, swinging Joel from side to side a bit in his arms. “I was kidding and you know it.”
“We’ll see,” Joel teased him for revenge. “You know 17 is an important year in life.”
“Where’d you get that? Seventeen magazine?” Benji raised his eyebrow.
“Was it that obvious?”
“Yes, Oblivious, it was,” Benji chuckled. “Now say ‘good-bye’ cuz I gotta go.”
In spite of his insistence he needed to go, Benji leaned into their kiss and it ended up Joel had to be the one to break it.
“I love you,” Joel said simply, his heart in his eyes.
“I love you, more,” Benji answered and reluctantly opened the door. Suddenly, something made him stop. A feeling; premonition; turned him around and made him shut the door.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m not sure,” He shook his head looking at Joel, concerned. “Just a weird feeling.”
“Like what?” Joel pressed him.
“Like…I don’t know…I feel like I’m gonna come home and you won’t be here,” Benji finished, shaking his head at the absurdity of his own statement.
Joel thought about that for a second then joked, “Well, I’ve lived with you in the same place for 6 months, so unless you are cheating on me, I’m not planning on moving into my own place.”
“I dunno,” Benji answered back, the feeling passing. “You were all hot and heavy about getting your own house back in that bathroom in PA.”
“I was pissed and I already apologized for that a million times,” Joel laughed. He noticed Benji still didn’t want to leave. “Hey, I’m not gonna leave. The guys will be here in about an hour and then we will all be at the practice space until you get there after work.”
“Yeah, I know,” Benji shook his head. “It was just weird. Sorry, look I gotta go. Love you and see you there later.”
“Love you too,” Joel watched as Benji walked out the door to the stairs. As he slipped out of sight, for just an instant, Joel had the same weird feeling…but this one made him feel like it was the last time he would see Benji.
“Get over it, Joel,” He said out loud to himself. “The two of you are just having a post traumatic stress syndrome moment. Everything is fine…just fine.”

“Yo! Madden! Hold on a second!”
“Hey, wasup?”
“That dude ever find you or your bro?”
“Huh? What dude?”
“He came by around 4:30 pm looking for you guys, showing a picture and all. I didn’t think you were here, so I sent him over to your twin…hey, where you going man? We got work to do!”
“Oh God, no, please no! Don’t let it be what I think it is!”

“FUCK! What are you doing here??”
“I came looking for the two of you…you weren’t easy to find…’Mr. Madden’…”
“How? How did you get this far?”
“Remember Stanley Smith?”
“Yeah?”
“Seems you told him your plans and he was quite helpful…including informing me of your name change. From there, it was just a matter of finding where in California the two of you were.”
“So now that you found us…what are you going to do?”
“Well I think that would be obvious…”

Benji burst into the apartment he shared with his brother. “JOEL!”
“Close, but not quite.”
Benji gaped. “JOSH?”
“Hey twinkie,” Josh smiled, rising up from the couch.
“Thank God it was you!” Benji threw his arms around his brother, hugging him tightly. Glancing at the clock, Benji saw that it was 4:52 pm. Joel was always late. He wouldn’t have left yet. The weird feeling from earlier came back with a vengeance.
“By the way,” Josh said shaking his finger at his little brother. “You guys really need to be more responsible. The door was unlocked when I got here.”
Benji’s stomach dropped down to his feet as he headed toward the door. “Was it unlocked or open?”
“Well it wasn’t quite shut,” Josh said, reaching into his backpack on the couch. “I thought one of you might of headed out for a quick second and were going to be right back.”
Benji swallowed hard, trying to quell his fear as he turned his back on his older brother to check the door handle to see if it was broken. “How long have you been here?”
CLICK
“Long enough to make sure Joel would be long gone before you got here.”
Slowly, Benji turned around in disbelief to see his older brother, Josh, pointing a 9mm semi-automatic at him with the hammer cocked!
